Leather. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. This book was owned by Daniel Sheffer, Democratic Representative from Pennsylvania. His name is engraved. Bound in a black leather with gilt lettering of the corded spine and both boards. Covers are rubbed and some light spotting. Head of spine has chipped away showing binding material, also chipped at tail and lower third. All corners are quite bumped, showing boards. Front hinge has seperated, back hinge and gutter remain solid. Faint shadowing of endpaper edges. Bookbinder's label lower back paste-down. Interior text has yellowed with age and there is some foxing of opening pages. Binding is tight, gilt textblock edges have some fading - rubbing. Gift inscription neatly inked center of fep, possibly written by the Representative. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

222pp. 8vo. 222pp. 8vo. Pages 111-222 comprise Thomas Jefferson's Manual on Parliamentary Practice. From the library of James Murray Mason, member of the House of Representatives from Virginia who authored the Fugitive Slave Act; his house in Winchester was destryed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. Noted for his embossed bindings, Benjamin Gaskill Sr. worked as a binder in the Philadelphia from ca. 1809 to 1855. Another copy of the present volume in the same binding is recorded by Spawn & Kinsella. Spawn & Kinsella 259 Contemporary full dark purple morocco, bound by Gaskill of Philadelphia with his binder's ticket in the rear, covers elaborately blocked in gilt, spine gilt with semi-raised bands in six compartments, pink glazed endpapers, gilt edges. Heavy toning to title, minor foxing to front and rear blanks. Provenance: James M. Mason (name in gilt on the upper cover); W.S. Jones (armorial bookplate).
