He apparently was bringing a tub full of colliers' picks towards the shaft, to be ready to be put in the cage, and seems to have been bringing it backwards, and he fell into the sump, and the tub fell on top of him, and got fatally crushed by the descending cage. Inspection made and inquest attended. While he was attempting to push a tub further in the cage, with his foot, and pulling down the bow, around the end of tub; he appears to have got his foot fast, after telling his mate to signal the winder to start. He was carried up about six yards, to the shelter covering, where he fell back, down the shaft into the sump. He died from pneumonia, accelerated by the the accident, April 17th, 1906. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was an old man, and after going through a pass-bye to the other side of the shaft, he is said to have walked back, and fallen into the sump. The gate and chain fencing was open, as they were about starting to wind coal. He fell a distance of ten feet, and succumbed to the injuries received, March 3rd, 1906. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased with three other men were taking down a wire rope to the pumps, in a sinking tub; one end was attached to a stretching screw fixed in a steel girder 96 yards from the surface. After they had reached about 200 yards from the surface, and uncoiling the rope, they appeared to have unscrewed the stretching screw, and the rope fell, fatally injuring deceased. The safer method (and usual way) is to take the rope down in the tub, and then haul it up. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was in the bottom shunt in the downbrow when he was struck by a lump of Inquiry made. Deceased got his knee injured with his tub, and slipped on the crossing of the shunt. A full tub in going up the brow, rising 1 in 4, got unlashed, the chain attaching it to the endless rope Inspection made and inquest attended.
