EXTRA REMUNERATION.

The Secretary was paid, from the Vote for the Chief Secretary's Office, during the year 1905-06, 501. extra remuneration in connection with the Inspection of Schools under the Educational Endowments (Ireland) Act, 1885, and a further sum of 191. 18. 10d. for acting as Centre Superintendent under the Intermediate Education Board for Ireland.

The Surplus of 361. 3s. 4d., shown on the Account of the Vote "Endowed Schools Commissioners, Ireland," for the year ended 31 March 1905, has been surrendered.

EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant.

A.-Surplus owing to additional attendant provided for by Treasury for Milltown Collection not having been appointed during financial year.

D.-Owing to the delivery of the Milltown Collection not having commenced until 1st March, only a portion of the sum allowed for the transfer and installation of the collection could be expended.

The Surplus of 76l. 16s. 6d., shown on the Account of the Vote "National Gallery, Ireland," for the year ended 31st March 1905, has been surrendered.

REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER AND AUDITOR GENERAL.

1. The delivery of the Milltown Collection not having commenced until 1st March, the amount of 1,390l. provided by the Supplementary Estimate for the cost of transfer and installation could not be wholly expended by the end of the year. This accounts for the considerable saving under Sub-head D., Incidental Expenses.

2. The Surplus to be Surrendered is, as shown by the Account, 966l. 9s. 1d.
