IDAHO HEARING

[blocks in formation]

NATIONAL FORESTS AND THE PUBLIC DOMAIN

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1925

UNITED STATES SENATE, SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC LANDS AND SURVEYS,

Boise, Idaho. The subcommittee met, pursuant to adjournment on Saturday, September 12, 1925, in the State Capitol Building, Boise, Idaho, at 10 o'clock a. m. Monday, September 14, 1925, Senator Tasker L. Oddie presiding.

Senator ODDIE. The committee will come to order. Senator Stanfield, the chairman, has been detained for a short time. He will be here this forenoon, and he has asked me to open the hearing.

This is a subcommittee of the Committee on Public Lands and Surveys of the United States Senate, which committee was authorized by Senate Resolution 347 adopted at the last session of Congress, to hold hearings on various problems connected with the public domain, forest reserves, national parks, mining reservations, Indian reservations, national monuments and any other reserves taken out of the public domain.

I will ask our friend, Senator Gooding, if he will do us the honor of sitting with us. He is very familiair with all these matters, and we will be highly pleased if he will sit with us and take part in these hearings.

Gentlemen, there is a matter coming before this meeting which is a little apart from the problems we have been discussing most. It relates to forest infestation. It happens to be a problem that I am particularly interested in. It first came before our committee in Missoula, Mont., where we had some very interesting testimony that subject. We have requested several of the Government entomologists and authorities from Idaho and other places to appear before the committee, so I think it will be very proper for them to be heard first. Then when Senator Stanfield comes he can conduct the hearings on the other problems as he has been doing heretofore. I will ask if there is any one here connected with the Bureau of Entomology?

STATEMENT OF MR. W. D. HUMISTON, MEMBER OF THE STATE COOPERATIVE BOARD OF FORESTRY OF IDAHO, POTLATCH, IDAHO

Senator ODDIE. Mr. Humiston, will you give your name, your address, and your position to the reporter.

Mr. HUMISTON. W. D. Humiston; of the State cooperative board of forestry; Potlatch, Idaho.
