EXPLANATIONS.

A. STOCK ACCOUNTS.

See page 196 for Recapitulation of Stock Accounts, showing net total value of stores, &c., to be drawn from existing stocks during the year without replacement.

1. PROVISIONS.-The estimated stocks at the beginning and end of the year respectively are 705,000l. and 691,500.

The Ration. The daily ration at home (for all ranks) consists of:

together with Tea, Sugar, Bacon, Cheese, Jam, &c.
Certain of the above items are commuted for their cash equivalent.

In addition a cash allowance of 34d. per head per day is made for the purchase of vegetables, &c.

The total cost of the ration for 1924-25 (including the cash allowance of 3d.) is estimated at 12.83d. as compared with the estimate of 14d. for 1923-24.

The actual issues in kind approximate to one-half of the total cost of the ration.

At stations abroad the ration is fixed to suit the climate.

When it is not possible for the ordinary ration to be issued, either because the men are on furlough or for other special reasons, a daily allowance based on retail prices is given.

2. FORAGE. The estimated stocks at the beginning and end of the year respectively are 102,000l. and 75,000Z.

The Forage Ration.-The cost of the forage ration at home for 1924-25 is estimated at 19.2d. as compared with the estimate of 22d. for 1923-24. The money allowance in lieu of forage is determined from time to time with reference to the

5. MEDICINES AND SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS.--The estimated stocks at the beginning and end of the year respectively are 501,000l. and 452,2407.

6. VETERINARY MEDICINES AND INSTRUMENTS.-The estimated stocks at the beginning and end of the year respectively are 79,6001. and 78,000Z.
