The increase in the number of patients during the year was 1,183; in the fiscal period of 9 months of 1916, the increase was 918; in the year 1915, 939; in 1914, 691; in 1913, 1,060; in 1912, 662; in 1911, 653; and in 1910, 1,118. The census of the 13 civil State hospitals shows an increase during the past fiscal year of 1,144; that of the State hospitals for the criminal insane, an increase of 31, and that of the private licensed institutions an increase of 8. The sex distribution of the insane patients under treatment in the various institutions was as follows: Sex distribution of the insane patients on the books of the various institu tions, June 30, 1917 In the civil State hospitals the females exceed the males by 2,755, and in the private institutions by 302. In the hospitals for the criminal insane the males exceed the females by 1,137. In all the institutions together the females exceed the males by 1,920.
