Hydrotherapeutic procedures.-Hydrotherapy has been an important factor in the treatment of patients in the hospital throughout the year; the bathrooms at the acute hospital Fairmount, and in the main building have been used daily, the baths being given by four trained attendants under the direction of the physicians

on the services from which the patients under treatment come. At Fairmount a large proportion of the recent admissions receive treatment of this character, it being found that cases of the maniedepressive type and allied conditions, dementia praecox and allied conditions, and alcoholic psychoses are benefited materially by this method of procedure. During the year 15,835 hydrotherapeutic treatments of various kinds have been given, the daily average being 50.

Surgical operations.-As heretofore, the minor surgery of the hospital has been done by members of the hospital staff, but the larger operations involving serious risk to life or requiring special technical knowledge, have been performed by a skilled surgeon engaged in general practice in the city of Binghamton, who has rendered gratuitous services to our patients whenever operations calling for unusual skill have been indicat d. This class of operations has included during the past year the surgical treatment of prolapse of uterus, volvulus, uterine polypus, carcinoma of breast, mastoiditis and fistula in ano, all of which were successfully undertaken by Dr. Arthur S. Chittenden of Binghamton. Special operations affecting the eye, ear, nose, throat and teeth have been performed by Dr. Frederic D. Branch, Dr. S. H. Kinne and Dr. Frederick W. MeCall of Binghamton.

Scientific research. Scientific research has been carried on in the pathological and chemical laboratories throughout the year, although the pathological work was seriously interrupted for a considerable part of the time owing to vacancies on the medical staff which necessitated detailing the hospital pathologist, Dr. Tiffany, to serve as physician in charge of the Broadmoor service where 700 men patients are cared for; this detail covered about half of the year and during this period required practically all of Dr. Tifany's time. Notwithstanding this interruption, however, 141 autopsies were performed, which was 75 per cent of the 188 eases terminating in death in the hospital; of the 141 patients coming to autopsy but 11 had no correspondents, the consent of relatives or friends was therefore necessary in 71 per cent of these eases. The autopsies revealed many interesting conditions, including an unusually large amber of gall-stones, some of which were of unusual size.
