description of any interesting scientific objects met with during the vacation. Abstracts of certain of the theses read before the State Board of Visitors, by members of the last graduating class, are thought likely to be of interest, both on account of their subject-matter and as specimens of the work done by our students, and are appended to this report. 11. PHYSICAL TRAINING-GYMNASIUM. The fine Gymnasium belonging to the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church, at New Brunswick, only three minutes' walk from the College campus, is, by the kindness of the Seminary authorities, open to the students of the College. Regular instruction in gymnastics by a thoroughly competent instructor is furnished, and students in the lower classes are required to take exercise in the Gymnasium four days in the week. The Athletic Association, composed of students of the College, have fine grounds for athletic sports. 12. THE LIBRARIES. The Library of the College is open for consultation during each term, as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 8 to 8:10 A. M., and from 12 M. to 12:30 P. M., and from 2 P. M. to 4:30 P. M.; on Saturdays, from 9 A. M. to 12:30 P. M., and 2 to 4:30 P. M. Students are allowed free access to the books, and are encouraged to become familiar with the proper methods of using a library for literary work. About 6,000 volumes have been added to the Library during the past year. P. VANDERBILT SPADER, Esq., of New Brunswick, has presented to the College a collection of some 4,500 books, valued at $15,000; and the Library Fund given by the late Gen. ROBERT C. PRUYN, of Albany, N. Y., provides for large annual additions to the Library. A "Subject-Catalogue" and an "Authors' Catalogue" have been prepared. By the gift of a permanent fund of $1,000 from JAMES SUYDAM Esq., supplemented by gifts from other sources, the Library is supplied with the leading learned periodical publications in the various departments. By the courtesy of the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church, the SAGE LIBRARY of more than 40,000 volumes is opened to the students of Rutgers for consultation; and under certain limitations books are drawn from it as well. It is within three minutes" walk of the College campus. 13. THE AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT AND STATE fund. The operations of the Agricultural Department during the past year are set forth in the accompanying report of the Professor in charge, and the lectures on Agriculture in several counties have been given as called for. The amount of money received from the State Treasurer (as the income of the Trust Fund held by the State for the College, realized from the sale of the United States Land Grant of 1862 for State Colleges) for the fiscal year ending October 31st, 1887, is six thousand nine hundred and sixty dollars ($6,960), which has been expended, as the law requires, exclusively for the salaries of Professors in the Scientific School.
