INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to present this first report of the operations of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council.

Coordination is not new to our members - their power systems have been interconnected for many years. But with the ever-growing demand for power, and with the development of more sophisticated methods of control, it became evident that a formal organization should be established.

The Council's main purpose is the promotion of reliability and efficiency in the electric bulk supply systems of its members.

The accomplishment of the goals of the Council will be materially assisted by the establishment of master control centers and associated satellites by the three regional groups within the Council area. Establishment of these centers is currently under way. Each control center will be carefully integrated into the overall interconnected system that now has a capability of more than 40,000,000 kilowatts and foresees a capability of more than 100 million kilowatts by the year 1990.

The modern revolution in the field of electric power involving larger generating units, the use of nuclear fuels, increased transmission voltages, more sophisticated computer controls and many other technical advances, will enable our systems to provide adequate and reliable power to meet the rapid growth in the demand of our customers.
