Low score honors in the qualifying round went to Fred Herreshoff, of Garden City, who made the thirty-six holes in 152. Herreshoff looked like a possible winner of the tournament until he met Evans in the third round. Fownes defeated Warren K. Wood, of Chicago, in the final round. Wood was wild and brilliant in streaks. The tournament was remarkable for two other things. There was a record breaking number of starters-more than two hundred. Then, two favorites, H.
