ADVERTISEMENT TO THE PRESENT EDITION.

THE high reputation which "WHARTON'S LAW DICTIONARY" has acquired, both in England and America, has rendered a second edition necessary in both countries.

While the author has carefully avoided making the work a mere common-place book, or a "prolix cyclopædia of exhaustive discussions," it may safely be pronounced, in the language of the English press, "the most complete Law Dictionary we possess." It contains a greater number of terms than any other work of the kind, and it is believed to be unequalled in the accuracy of its definitions. The author has so thoroughly performed his task, as to diminish, in some degree, the necessity of additions or annotations by the American editor.

In preparing this edition, the editor has endeavored to increase its usefulness, by the addition of some articles omitted in the original, and which are applicable to the state of the law in this country. Occasional references have been added, showing the sources of American law on the subjects treated. The new matter is contained in brackets.

Frequent reference is made throughout the work to the Commentaries of Sir William Blackstone. The American student will find the edition containing Judge Sharswood's annotations particularly convenient and useful. The learned annotator has preserved such of the English notes as are necessary to the proper elucidation of the subject, while his own labors give to the original commentaries great additional value.
