PARSON GILMAN'S SERMONS. [Miss PHEBE M. BUXTON.] A manuscript volume of Rev. Tristram Gilman's sermons is in the possession of one of his namesakes, Dea. T. G. Prince, of Cape Elizabeth. The book is of small size, but contains twentyone sermons and sketches of discourses, written in a minute but very legible hand, and was undoubtedly intended for the preservation of such compositions as the writer anticipated using more than once. The notes appended to some of these discourses record the various times and places of their delivery, and give an idea of the venerable pastor's preaching circuit. The second discourse in the volume was preached at the "Annual Thanksgiving, Dec. 12, 1776," from Ps. xxxiv, 1. While enforcing the duty of God's people to bless and praise Him at all times, the preacher indulges in despondent views respecting his country's condition. "I know not how others view ye State of our publick Affairs, but to me they wear a gloomy Aspect. The British Armies already in America have not only gained great Advantages against us, but it seems probable more foreign Troops are contracted for by ye British Court, while we have no certainty of any foreign Assistance at all. Our only Dependence is upon ye Lord our God, and Him we continue to provoke by our Impieties and Immoralities. O it is certainly high Time for us to repent and return to ye Lord, otherwise we may fear He will yet punish us seven Times for our Iniquities." Another sermon was preached at Raymond, March 27, 1768, and again at Candia, Nov. 6, 1768; with additions at North Yarmouth as a sacramental lecture, Sept. 20. 1770; at New Casco, Aug. 18, 1775; and twice more at North Yarmouth, in 1776 and 1793. A discourse whose earliest date was Dec., 1769, appears to have been a favorite with preacher or people, judging from its numerous repetitions. Preached first at North Yarmouth on the date mentioned, it reappears in part" at Kennebunk, Jan., 1770; at North Yarmouth again, March, 1774; at "Harrisicket," Feb., 1777; at Royalsborough, March, 1777; at North Yarmouth the third time, Dec., 1780; at North Yarmouth the fourth time, Mar., 1783; at the "New School House, Walnut Hill," Aug., 1791; and at North Yarmouth for the fifth time, Nov., 1796. A "Quarterly Lecture" on Jan., 1796, was repeated at New Gloucester, April, 1801; at "Exeter, New Ch.." June, 1801; and at Gray, when about gathering a church," June, 1803. From the text in Tim., "Preach the Word," there is a discourse of unusual length to which Mr. Gilman has appended this note : "Pr. ye 2d Sabbath and the first time I pr. after my Ordination." Dec. 2, 1781, Mr. Gilman preached a sermon at North Yarmouth which he repeated there Feb., 1784. It next appears as a "Lecture at Josiah Skillens," Sept., 1785; then at "Capt. Prince's," Aug., 1791; at "Bakers Town," July, 1793; and afterwards at Chebeag," Sept., 1804. Mr. Gilman makes but little use in this manuscript of anything like short-hand. -a few familiar symbols and abbreviations are alone employed. Besides such notes as those above quoted, others are occasionally found relating to the weather or the numbers present at divine service.
