For more than thirty years she has been a writer for the press, contributing to various weekly and monthly periodicals, mainly articles of a religious character. license. Mrs. Wellcome has for many years been connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and, in 1874, was requested by her Presiding Elder to go before the Ministerial Conference, about to hold a session in Portland, as a candidate for a local preacher's She was reluctant to take this unusual step, but at last consented and presented herself for examination, which proved eminently successful. The matter occasioned warm discussion among the ministers, but with this result: "That for the first time in N. England, and probably within the limits of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a woman was granted by a Quarterly Conference of ministers the rights and freedom to exercise her gifts as a local preacher." From that day to this, there has never been the slightest trouble as to the renewal of the license. (62.2 7.) A. C. D. (277-8) SMALL-The Portland Transcript, July 6, 1878, contains the following item relative to a young lady resident of this place: "In Schumakers's window is a spirited crayon of a handsome boy of sixteen, executed by his cousin, Miss Leila L. Small, of Yarmouth, who is developing a remarkable talent in this line of art." And in a notice of the County Fair, Oct. 12, 1878, there is this reference: "The art display was not large, but there was a creditable crayon copy of a landscape by S. D. Seabury, of Yarmouth, well-executed crayon head of a child, by Miss Leila L. and a Small, of Yarmouth." Miss Small is at present devoting herself to conscientious study of her art, in Boston, under the best instruction. Her intuitions and perceptions are unusually quick, hence her progress is rapid, and there is good promise that she will develope into an artist of genuine power. She was born in Lisbon, Me., Mar. 1859. Miss Small's mother was Miss Jane Small, daughter of Daniel Small, of Freeport, and sister of Capt. Charles and Capt. Alfred Small. She married Thomas Small, of Lisbon, a very able and energetic man, from whom (the modest little mother says) Miss Leila derives her quick and ready brain. (62.7 L P 9) (277-9) A. C. D. FELT-Essex County Registry of Deeds (at Salem, Mass.), pp. 32-138. Moses Felt, aged 63, deposes about land near Mussel Cove and the Three Brothers Islands and Little Chebeague Island, "which my Brother George Felt, late of Casco Bay, possessed without molestation these fifty years, unless it was by the Indians driving them away." Sworn to 4 Mar. 1713. The above George Felt was killed on House Island, in 1676, as narrated by Willis. These two depositions show that he owned land within the limits of old North Yarmouth. Little Chebeague is now in the town of Cumberland. Ibid; 32, 139. Moses Felt deposes: "that my Brother George Felt, late of Casco Bay, deceased by ye Indian War. bought a tract or neck of land of William Hinds, late of Casco Bay, which is about 2 miles or thereabouts & buts against Tobacco Point Cove on one side & Little River on ye other side, with all ye marsh belonging, which my brother George Felt bought of said Hinds all his right, &c, to ye tract called Pine Point & quietly possessed it till ye Indian war drove them away."
