Barrett Potter was the second lawyer who lived in North Yarmouth. He was born in Lebanon, N. H., graduated at Dartmouth College, and came to North Yarmouth in Nov. 1801 and remained until Mar. 1805, then removed to Gorham and afterwards to Portland. He was appointed Judge of Probate for Cumberland County in Feb. 1822.

My father, Samuel Baker, came to North Yarmouth, Me., from Marshfield, Mass. His wife was Susanna Mitchell [No. 17 in Mitchell Family, p. 248], and sister of Deacon Jacob Mitchell.

Gilbert Winslow was a cousin to my father. They came here about the same time. I was thirteen years old when my father died. He lived and died on the spot where the workhouse now stands, which was built by my brother, Samuel Baker, on the spot where our old house stood.

Old Mrs. Powell, widow of John Powell, died in Boston. She was a very pious woman. She was named Ann Dum:ner.;

Almost every house was a garrison,-ours was one. I well remember when Ebenezer Eaton was killed on the Ledge and Benjamin Lake taken prisoner.

I remember old Mr. Royal. Jacob an Elias were his sons. I also remember the old lady. Winthrop Royal, the tailor, [see No. 27, p. 579, also pp. 613, 660, 749, 751, 804, 902, 907], was also a brother [of whom?] The old man had a negro "Pomp." I was at Priscilla Royal's wedding; she married a Haskell.

I remember when the Mitchell and Chandler boys were taken by the Indians. It was Saturday,-the boys had eaten dinner and been sent from Mr. Mitchell's place after the cows. Young Chandler came home by way of France.

I went to school to Robert Bailey.

Amos Clough, aged ninety-one years, says: I was born in Brentwood, N. H. Benjamin Welch, of this town, was my uncle. He came from Kingston, N. H. I came to North Yarmouth to see my uncle the next year after the meeting-house was enlarged in April [1763], and worked at Col. Powell's until the fall of 1765. I was married to my present wife the spring before [May, 1765], and moved to the farm I now live on the next fall [1766.] I bought my land of Powell.

I suppose Col. Powell was about 47 or 48 years old when I came to North Yarmouth, and he was as much as 55 years old when he was married [Sept. 15, 1768.] His mother was a sister to Gov. Dummer, from whom Col. Powell told me he received a large estate.

Col. Powell was a very pleasant man and used his workmen well. He used to have rum in haying-time. He built his tomb the second year I lived with him. I assisted in removing the

remains of Col. Powell's father and Parson Loring from their graves into this tomb.

When Col. Powell's sisters were in Boston, black "Poll" was housekeeper. When I came to North Yarmouth, Tuttle had commenced his settlement. Israel and John True came from Salisbury, Mass., and had begun to clear land before I came. Old Mrs. Cutter died after I came to North Yarmouth. Her maiden name was Dorothy Bradbury,-a sister to a Bradbury who lived on the Royal farm road. Gilbert Winslow died a short time before the Revolution [error, see p. 1103.]
