(78.17:29AT To the Senate and Honourable House of Representatives in General Court assembled: The subscribers. inhabitants of the Town of North Yarmouth, in the County of Cumberland, ask leave humbly to represent, that your petitioners humbly aware of the importance of the instruction of youth, in the winter of 1810-11 subscribed a sum of money toward erecting a school-house in which youth of both sexes might have an opportunity of receiving a better education than common town schools generally afford, and that notwithstanding the pressure of the times, they have built a convenient honse in a central and pleasant part of the town, which is now nearly ready to receive a school; that they have expended in building said schoolhouse, including the land, one thousand seven hundred and eighteen dollars, and that a further sum of one hundred and fifty-six dollars remains due from subscribers. But your petitioners being numerous and unincorporated find it difficult to conduct the undertaking to any advantage. They therefore pray your honours that said school may by Act of Incorporation be established as an Academy, and a suitable number of Trustees appointed to regulate the same, with power to receive and appropriate such contributions and donations as may be hereafter made toward the permanent establishmant of said school, and a fund for the support thereof, and as in duty bound will ever pray. In the attempt to resettle the town, President Thos. Danforth, 17 Aug. 1681, appointed George Pearson, Anthony Brackett and George Ingersoll, Senior, a committee for "y® furtherance of the settlement." This aforesaid committee are hereby desired to lay out unto Isaac Cussons such a tract of land for his settlement within the aforesd townshipp as may be mete accomodation, he or his son ingaging to com y' and to accomodate the inhabitants by worke of his trade" [ York Deeds, IV, 41.] He may have been some connection of the earlier settler, John Cousins. There was an Isaac Cousins, of Rowley, about 1650, who came from Marlboro, Wiltshire, and went to New London where he had a grant of land, 1651, but did not take it, returning to Rowley. He had wife Ann [Hunt], in 1658, according to the Boston Town Records, who was formerly the wife of one John Edwards, but on the same record it appears that by a former wife Elizabeth (who d. 14 Dec. 1656) he had dau. Sarah b. 31 Aug. 1656 [Savage.] An Isaac Cousins was killed at Wells in 1675 [Bourne, 143.] Abraham Cousins m., 19 Nov. 1684, Mary Eames (perhaps a dau. of Thomas), and had, Abraham, b. 22 Aug. 1685; Isaac, b. 2 June 1688; Jacob and Joseph, twins, b. 13 Aug. 1692; Mary, b. 10 May 1695. |
