GREENE COUNTY. In this county there is a large belt of coal on the west side with an average thickness of six feet, and is of good quality. At the little town of Linton this coal is not quite so thick but is of superior quality, and is said to be excellent for coke, gas, and the manufacture of iron. This coal no doubt would be speedily developed if railway facilities were provided. A narrow guage road is being built through the field which will perhaps afford an outlet, as it intersects the Evansville and Terre Haute at Sullivan, and the Indianapolis and Vincennes at Swits City. This is not only a good coal, but it is covered by a good roof, . and has a good floor which contributes largely to the economical working of the coal. GIBSON COUNTY. There is only one mine in operation in this county. A reference to my table will show that the coal is only two feet and six inches in thickness. The only mines operated in this county are at Edwardsport; two are rather largely worked. The operators are desirous to work their mines in compliance with the law. The coal in some parts of the mine is good, when the two little seams of sulphur are taken out. There are other veins of coal in this county, which are as yet undeveloped. I hear that preparations are being made to work them.. MARTIN COUNTY. I only inspected two mines in this county, one at Shoals and the other at Loogootee. There are several other mines, but they were not in operation. at the time of my visits. At Shoals, the coal may be described as a semi-block, being of a hard nature, and being intersected by open fissures in a similar manner to the block of Clay county, and from what I can learn, it is an excellent burning coal. The coal at Loogootee is a good caking quality, but in some cases divided by a band of dirt in the middle of the vein, which renders it difficult to keep clean. |
