JOURNAL OF THE SENATE.

At a General Assembly of the State of Illinois, begun and held in the City of Springfield, on Monday, the fifth day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, being the first session of the Twenty-third General Assembly, the members of the Senate met in the Senate Chamber, at twelve o'clock M., when the Honorable Lieutenant Governor called the body to order.

On motion of Mr. Underwood,

W. D. Latshaw, of Edgar, was appointed Secretary pro tem.
On the further motion of Mr. Underwood,

D. J Waggoner, of Fulton, was appointed Sergeant-at-arms pro tem.
On motion,

The Secretary pro tem. was instructed to call the roll of members holding over; which being done, the following named Senators answered to their names, to-wit:

Messrs. Berry, Bushnell, Gregg, Pickett, Rodgers and Underwood. The Secretary was then instructed to call the list of members elect; which being done, the following gentlemen answered to their names, and, by request of the presiding officer, came forward, presented their certificates, and the oath of office having been duly administered by Hon. Judge Higbee, in pursuance of law, took their seats, viz:

Messrs. Addams, Allen, Blanchard, Funk, Green, Knapp, Lansing, Lindsay, Mason, Moffatt, Peters, Richards, Schofield, Vandeveer, Ward, Worcester.

Mr. Underwood moved that the certificate of the Senator from the fourteenth senatorial district be referred to the committee on elections, when formed.

Mr. Bushnell moved to amend by referring to a special committee; which motion was decided in the negative.

And the motion again recurring on referring to the committee on elections, Mr. Bushnell demanded the ayes and noes thereon; which being taken,

It was decided in the affirmative, as follows:
