ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE, GREENWICH, NAVAL Store Officer, Cashier and Librarian (Retired Pay (4501.-201-550%.) (300.-15.-4007.) (a) The rates and scales of pay show in brackets (except where shown as inclusive) carry an addition in respect of Cost of Living Bonus payable in accordance with the scheme set out in Appendix No. 7 on page 306. The money provision for each item represents the total remuneration, including bonus where payable. (b) In occupation of Official Residence or Quarters. The College was established in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on the Higher Education of Naval Officers, 1870, and was opened on 1 February 1873. Instruction is given to Naval and Marine Officers in all branches of theoretical and scientific study bearing upon their professions with the object of affording every advantage in respect of scientific education, and is open(1) To Officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and the Royal Indian Marine. (2) To Probationary Assistant Constructors. The Medical School was established in accordance with the recommendation of the Committee on the Naval Medical Service, for the following purposes : (1) The instruction of Medical Officers in bacteriology and clinical pathology, hygiene and skiagraphy. (2) Research work. (3) Analytical and bacteriological work for the Navy and the manufacture of vaccines and serums. The College Session extends approximately from 1 October to 30 June, and consists of three terms. Private Students of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering pay a fee for each session, which is included in Subhead M., Appropriations in Aid." " Fees are also charged in respect of Officers of Dominion Navies taking courses at the College. Receipts from this source are similarly included in Subhead M., "Appropriations in Aid." The numbers and emoluments of the Salaried Officers of the Staff, Professional and Clerical, are fixed by the Treasury. The sanction of that Department is also required for any alterations in numbers or pay of Hired Civilians. A small proportion of the rent, lighting, water, cleaning and maintenance charges is incurred in respect of the Office of the Chaplain of the Fleet (Vote 12) and the Nautical Almanac Office (Vote 6) which are housed in the College buildings. Half the expenditure on water is recoverable from Greenwich Hospital Funds and is credited to Vote 5 M, "Appropriations in Aid." NAVY ESTIMATES, 1926. EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCE. ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE, GREENWICH, A.-SALARIES, WAGES AND CONTINGENCIES -continued. Prizes of the value of £20 each are awarded to the Officers who stand highest on the examination list for Et, Gt and Tt, respectively. A Prize of a sword or revolver is awarded to the senior Lieutenant, Royal Marines, who obtains first place in the aggregate of the examinations held during each probationary course of instruction. Probationary Assistant Constructors.-Prizes of books or instruments to the value of £25 are distributed annually among the best of the first and second year students. Those who obtain a First Class Certificate at the end of the Greenwich Course are awarded a prize of £25. Prizes in the nature of Books are paid for out of Stationery Office Votes. Electrical Engineering.-A Scholarship of the value of £40 a year, tenable for one year, which may, at Admiralty discretion, be continued for a second and third year, is awarded to an Electrical Fitter Apprentice who has completed a 4 years' course of study at a Dockyard School. Only one scholarship may be held at any one time. Fees for Lectures to Medical Officers.—A sum of £150 per annum is paid to the London School of Tropical Medicine for a course of lectures followed by microscopic demonstrations. Senior Officers' War Courses.-The Senior Officers' War Course takes place twice a year at Greenwich. About 20 Officers attend each course, which lasts for about four months. It is designed primarily to give junior Captains, prior to taking up Commands afloat, an opportunity of studying the broader aspects of war. Two Officers from the Army, one from the Air Force, and one from the Royal Naval Reserve are usually attached to each course. Lectures are also given on such subjects as Economics, International Law, &c., for which purpose specialists in these subjects are engaged. A Library of Naval, Military and Historical books is provided for the combined use of the Senior Officers' War Course and Staff Course. Staff Course.-The Course at the Staff College, Greenwich, is an annual course lasting about ten months. Its purpose is to train Officers of Lieutenants, LieutenantCommanders and Commanders rank in the study of war, and in staff duties, with a view to providing suitable Officers for duty on the Staffs of Flag Officers and on the Naval Staff. The number of Officers who qualify annually is about 25. Two Army, two Air Force, two Dominion Officers, and one Officer of the Indian Army are attached to each course when available.
