REPORT.

OFFICE OF THE NEVADA STATE WEATHER SERVICE,
CARSON CITY, Nevada, February 7, 1893.

To His Excellency, R. K. Colcord, Governor of Nevada: ·

SIR: In compliance with the provisions of an Act entitled "An Act to establish a Weather Service Station in Nevada, and to provide for the appointment of a Director thereof, and appropriating money to pay the expenses of the same," approved February 19, 1887, I have the honor to transmit herewith my official report for the year ending December 31, 1892.

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
CHAS. W. FRIEND,

Director.

GENERAL SUMMARY.

Since the last annual report no special changes have taken place, this service still keeping in line with similiar scientific associations, having for their aim the study of climate, the compilation of important meteorological phenomena and the benefit of the agricultural classes.

STATIONS.

During the past year, stations were established at South Camp, Douglas county, Mr. A. C. Pratt assuming control. At McDermitt, Humboldt county, the postmaster volunteered his services as reporting observer, beginning in April; and, through the ever ready and always valuable efforts of Mr. George Nicholl, one of our best observers, a station was established in June at Empire Ranch, in the northern part of Nye county, Miss Bessie Potts making out the reports for this office. The Southern Pacific railroad agents at Battle Mountain, Lander county; Golconda, Humboldt county; Halleck and Toano, Elko county, commenced forwarding copies of their meteorological records during the year. Under authority from this office, the observer at Belmont is making efforts to establish a station in Smoky valley, in the northern part of Nye county.

INSTRUMENTS.

All the thermometers in use by the observers of this service are made by Green, probably the best thermometer maker in this country. The rain-guages are of the Dunwoody pattern. Five stations, Austin, Belmont, Carson City, Elko and Pioche have Richard's barographs and thermographs besides a set of the maximum and minimum self-registering thermometers and a rain-guage, such as are furnished each office of this service, except to those under the control of the Southern Pacific Railroad Co., which have only a thermometer and rain-guage. The only exception to this rule is Crane's Ranch, which is a rainfall station and consequently has but a rain-guage.

PUBLICATIONS.

On or about the fifteenth day of each month an edition of the "Nevada Monthly Weather Review" has been published and copies mailed to all observers, those interested in the climatology of Nevada,
