The Poetical Works of James Russell Lowell: With Illustrations

Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue (1869 - 1924) trained as an architect with Renwick, Aspinwall and Russell in New York, and moved to Boston to join the architectural firm of Cram and Wentworth as an equal partner. Goodhue's primary influences were the late medieval period and the work of William Morris. Goodhue's first book design work was for Copeland and Day, and later designed covers for the Merrymount Press, Small Maynard, Houghton Mifflin, Longmans and John Lane. He also designed the typefaces "Merrymount" and "Cheltenham". As his commissions in his architectural firm took a larger portion of his time, Goodhue's work in book design work became increasingly restricted until 1903, when it stopped altogether after he successfully pursued his architectural career full time in New York.
