BRYCE CANYON IN SOUTHERN UTAH, VIEWED FROM THE RIM The chasm discloses a vision of fairylike, filigreed lacework of stone, suffused with colors of endless variety. So stupendous are the dimensions of these Western wonderlands that one loses all sense of proportion. The pink stone mass in the foreground is about the size of New York's famous Flatiron Building. Nature has wrought grotesque figures of men, animals, trees, flowers, towers and temples in the rocks of Bryce Canyon. The forces of Nature have been at work in Bryce Canyon for countless æons and have carved multitudinous monuments from its sandstone walls. The formation at the right is known as the "Wall of Windows." Several of the apertures are high enough to accommodate comfortably a six-story building. Many of its strange and fantastic formations are graven from a rock as white as pure Carrara, while others reflect the soft rose pink of the sunset glow. O National Geographic Society The 14,255-foot summit was first attained in 1868 and its ascent has since become one of the favorite expeditions of America's aspiring amateur mountain climbers. Several beautiful snow-born streams flowing from Longs Peak have carved canyons in the vicinity. |
