THE SELECT COMMITTEE appointed to control the Kitchen and Refreshment Rooms in the department of the Serjeant-at-Arms have agreed to the following REPORT with the annual Statement of Income and Expenditure for the year ended 31st December, 1922, which has been duly audited. The Return of the days on which the House sat in Session during 1922, compared with the year 1921 and the number of meals served (including teas and meals at bars) : The total receipts compare with the year 1921 as follows: : 5 1,493 15 3 The decline in Revenue and number of Meals served, as compared with the year 1921-is accounted for by the fact that the business of the House occupied only 133 days, against 145 days 1921. The expenditure in Wages and Salaries, Insurance, and Drink Allowance amounted amounted to £8,913 8s. 2d. as compared with £9,182 10s. 8d. in 1921, and of this amount £2,227 15s. 2d. was for periods when the House was closed, as compared with £2,299 13s. 7d. in the previous year. The decrease is accounted for by the reduction in salaries, although the vacations were longer, and a larger number of servants were retained than in 1921. 41345 A 2 The Statement of Income and Expenditure shows a surplus on the year of £864 13s. 8d. after providing free meals during the Session to all the staff, and expenditure for : After providing for all liabilities, the amount standing to the credit of Capital Account in the Balance Sheet represented by Stock on hand, Cash in hand and at Bank, Sundry Debtors, etc., is £6,043 8s. 6d. as compared with £4,840 9s. 10d. in 1914. Having regard to the fact that the expenditure for Wages, Salaries and Retainers, and for Laundry and Expenses (although a reduction is shown as compared with last year) is still considerably higher than in 1914, the last normal year, and notwithstanding the suspension of the Subsidy by the Treasury, in aid of Servants' Wages and Repairs and Renewals, the financial position has been considerably improved as compared with that year. The Committee find the Accounts presented, with the working results and explanations given, satisfactory.
