The amount provided for Fees is distributed by the Admiralty on the recommendation of the Adviser on Education. Service Examiners are not, however, to be employed whose total emoluments are thereby raised above £1,500 per annum. No Officer is paid for any examination held in the Ship, Fleet, or Establishment in which he himself and the examinees are serving. No excess can be incurred on the amount approved for examinations (£2,500) without Treasury sanction. H.-CONTRIBUTIONS IN AID OF SCHOOLS. Provision for this service has been transferred to Vote 11, Subhead T. DOCKYARD SCHOOLS AT HOME AND ABROAD. I-SALARIES, WAGES AND ALLOWANCES, &c. The Dockyard Schools were established by Order in Council of 1 February, 1843, to enable apprentices to acquire a scientific knowledge of their profession. Pupils attending Dockyard Schools.-Dockyard apprentices, Naval Shipwright Apprentices, and other boys employed in the Dockyards and other Naval Establishments. Children of Workmen also attend the Schools at Malta and Bermuda. The Apprentices receive additional instruction during the evening from Draughtsmen, &c., whose pay is provided for under Vote 8, Sec. 1. The special instruction allowances payable are provided under this Subhead. In cases in which such instruction is given during Dockyard hours the Draughtsmen receive no allowance, but their ordinary pay for the time occupied is charged to this Subhead. The pay of Inspectors of Trades while attending the examination of Apprentices for purposes of supervision is similarly charged. Home Yards.-At each Dockyard there is an upperand a lower school. Apprentices enter between the ages of 15 and 17, and during the first year of their service, attendance either at the upper or lower school is compulsory, the distinction as to the school they attend being determined by the knowledge shown by the apprentice on entry. The more promising boys are allowed to attend for further periods up to a maximum of four years, about one-half of the pupils of the first, second, and third years being selected for retention for an additional year. The attendance of Naval Shipwright Apprentices during the first three years of training is compulsory. Apprentices who attend the upper school for the fourth year are instructed in the Drawing Offices. (Continued over.) G-OFFICE OF THE ADVISER ON EDUCATION. Attendance at evening school of Yard and other Boys.Arrangements are made for Yard and other Boys, for whom no accommodation is available in the Dockyard Schools, to attend Evening Classes at Civilian Schools until they are 18 years of age. Fees are paid up to 12s. per head. Professional instruction is given in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and in Electrical Engineering, respectively, to Shipwright, Engine Fitter, and Electrical Fitter apprentices of the third and fourth years of service. Prizes in the nature of books are paid for out of Stationery Office Votes. Fuel, Furniture, Gas, Water and Electric Current, formerly provided for under Vote 8, are now charged to this Head. Fees for conducting Examinations at the Dockyard Schools at Malta, Bermuda, Gibraltar, and the Cape are provided for under Subhead G. Fees for conducting the entrance examinations of apprentices in Naval Yards abroad are provided for under Vote 8, Sec. 1, Subhead H. (See preceding page.) NAVY ESTIMATES, 1924-25.
