Cashier and director Tri-County State Bank. Republican; Baptist. Bishop, Seth Scott, physician, surgeon, author, was born Feb. 7, 1852, in Fond du Lac, Wis. He was educated at the Pooler institute, the university of New York, at Beloit college, and at the medical department of the Northwestern university. He was surgeon to the Illinois charitable eye and ear infirmary; and consulting surgeon to the Silver cross hospital af Joliet. He is professor of diseases of the nose, throat and ear in the medical college of Loyola university; is professor in the Chicago postgraduate medical school and hospital; and surgeon to various hospitals and charities. He has invented numerous surgical instruments and apparatus in general use by the medical professsion. He is the author of Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Ear; The Ear and Its Diseases; and scores of Monographs. Bishop, William Thomas, president American Electro-Therapeutic Association, was born Nov. 11, 1840, in Hummelstown, Pa. He graduated from the high school of Harrisburg, Pa.; and in 1897 graduated from the Rush Medical College of Chicago, Ill. During ht ecivil war in 1862-63 he served as a private orderly, sergeant and as second lieutenant in Pennsylvania regiments. During the next ten years he was engaged principally in the banking business. Since 1879 he has practiced medicine in Harrisburg, Pa.; and in 1886-1910 was medical examiner for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He was surgeon of his post grand army of the republic; and is now post commander, having served three years, and is also aide de camp of the commander-in-chief of the G. A. R.; and is a prominent mason. In 1886 he was president of the Harrisburg Pathological Society; in 1888 was president of the Dauphin County Medical Society; and in 1895 was president of the American Electro-Therapeutic Association; and resides in Harrisburg, Pa. He is dean and professor of operative dentistry, pathology and bacteriology at the Northwestern university dental. school of Chicago, Ill. He is the author of Formation of Poisons. by Micro-Organisms; Periosteum and Peridental Membrane; Anatomy of the Human Teeth; Black's Operative Dentistry. Black, Warren Columbus, D.D., clergyman, journalist, author, was born May 24, 1848, in Copiah county, Miss. He acquired a superior education chiefly through his own efforts. He was in the Confederate army from 1861 to 1865. During the next five years he was engaged in teaching. In 187 he joined the Mississippi Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He filled the leading churches of his conference with distinction. In 1886, 1890, 1894, 1898, and 1902 he was a delegate to the General Conference. In 186 he declined the presidency of two colleges, viz., Whitworth college, Brookhaven, Miss., and Centenary college, Jackson, La. From 1898 to 1900 he was editor and pubDr. Black has lisher of the New Orleans Christian Advocate. lectured in nine different states; and three of his lectures have attracted much attention, viz. God in Nature, Genesis and Geology, and Is Man Immortal? In 1910 he retired from the pastorate, but is still active with his pen. He resides at Tupelo, Miss. Black, William Henry, clergyman, college president, author, was born March 19, 1854, in Centerville, Ind. In 1890 he was elected president of Missouri Valley college of Marshall, Mo. He is the author of God, Our Father; Womanhood; Sermons for the Sunday School: and Outline Life of Paul. Blackburn, J. K. P., state senator of Tennessee, was born Feb. 20, 1837, in Maury County, Tenn. He was educated in the Alma Institute of Hallettsville, Tex. He is a successful farmer of Lynnville, Tenn.; is identified with the Democratic party; and a member of the Csristian church. In 1883 and 1885 he served two terms as a representative in the Tennessee legislature; is a member of the state senate of Tennessee; and resides in Lynnville, Tenn. Blackman, Wilbur Fisk, judge district court of Louisiana, was born December 10, 1841, in Harris county, Ga. For six years he was a member of the state legislature; and for one year, in 1868, was presidential elector for the state at large; and for thirty-two years has been district judge and court of appeals. Blackman, Frederick Leonard, United States congressman from the fourth district of Alabama, was born Sept. 15, 1873, in Polk County, Ga. For four years he was city attorney of Anniston, Ala.; and in 1900-10 was a member of the Alabama state senate. He was elected a member of the sixty-second congress for the term of 1911-13; and resides in Anniston, Ala. Blair, Robert W., lawyer of Topeka, Kan., was born March 17, 1865, in Doylestown, Pa. He is engaged in the general practice of law; is general attorney for the Union Pacific Railway Company; and has filled various positions of trust and honor. Blackwell, Mrs. Antoinette Brown, minister, author, was born May 20, 1825, in Henrietta, N.Y. She is a unitarian minister prominent in the woman suffragist's movement and in other reforms. She is the author of Studies in General Science; The Market Woman; The Island Neighbors, a novel of American life; The Sexes Throughout Nature; The Physical Basis of Immortality; The Many and the One; and The Philosophy of Individuality. Blackwood, Alexander Leslie, physician, surgeon, author, was born July 28, 1862, in Quebec, Canada. Since 1888 he has practiced medicine and surgery in Chicago, Ill. He is the author of Diseases of Heart and Lung; and other medical works. Blair, DeWitt Clinton, banker, was born in Blairstown, N.J., 1833; son of John Insley and Ann (Locke) Blair; graduated from Princeton college, A. He is proprietor of The Homestead of Moultonboro, N.H.; and for six terms has been chairman of the board of selectmen, his present term ending in 1913. He is also commissioner of Carroll County for the term of 1910-13. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias; has been a member of the board of education and filled various other positions of trust and honor. Blanchard, James Armstrong, judge Supreme Court of New York, was born Aug. 16, 1845, in Henderson, N.Y. At the age of nine years he was taken by his parents to Fond du Lac, Wis.; and while preparing for college he enlisted in the second Wisconsin volunteer cavalry; and was mustered out in 1865. In 1871 he graduatel from Ripon College; and in the meantime taught school to pay his expenses. In 1873 he graduated from the law school of Columbia College of New York city; and soon attained prominence at the bar. In 1901 he was elected justice of the Supreme Court of the state of New York for the term ending in 1915; and resides in New York City.
