Adkins, William Lucius, lawyer and statesman, was born Oct. 18, 1859, in Colorado County, Tex. He received a thorough education; and graduated from the Texas Military Institute. He has attained success in the practice of law in Columbus, Colorado County, Tex. He has been chairman of the county Democratic party; and he served as a Democratic congressional chairman. He has been a representative in the Texas state legislature; and served on several important committees. He was presidential elector for Alton B. Parker; and a delegate to the Democratic national convention that nominated William Jennings Bryan the second time.

Aiken, Wyatt, United States congressman from the third district of South Carolina, was born Dec. 14, 1863. In 1884-97 he was official court stenographer; and is now a successful farmer. He served in the Spanish-American war in the Abbeville volunteers. In 1903-13 he was a Democratic representative from South Carolina to the fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses. He was re-elected to te sixty-second congress from the third district of South Carolina for the term of 1911-13; and resides in Abbeville, S. C.

Ailshie, James Franklin, lawyer and jurist of Grangeville, Idaho, was born June 19, 1868, in Green County, Tenn. For two terms he was regent of Idaho State University. Since 1903 he has been associate justice of the State Supreme Court of Idaho; and was chief justice in 1907-08.

Ainey, William D. B., United States congressman from the fourteenth district of Pennsylvania, was born April 18, 1864, in New Milford, Pa. Since 1887 he has practiced law; and he has served six years as district attorney. He was elected to the sixty-second congress as a republican to fill a vacancy; and resides in Montrose, Pa.

Ainsworth, Frank Beveridge, reformer and business man, was born Aug. 11, 1841, in Lisbon, N. Y. During the civil war he was aid-de-camp, quartermaster, adjutant, and finally provost marshal in the defenses of Washington. In 1870 he was a delegate from the state of Indiana to the international congress on penitentiary and reformatory discipline at Cincinnati, Ohio; and in 1867-77 was superintendent of the Indiana house of refuge. He was the author of the mark system; was a director of the United States prison congress; and participated in the internabeen engaged in insurance; is considered an aupthority on policy contracts; and is now seretary and general manager of the Bankers' Reserve Fund Life Insurance Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Akin, Theron, United States congressman from the twentyfifth district of New York, was born in Johnstown, N. Y., County of Fulton, in the year 1855; was educated in the common school of Amsterdam and at home; is the president of the Village of Akin, N. Y.; was elected to the sixty-second congress.

Alderton, Henry Arnold, physician and surgeon, was born in New York City, December 28, 1863; son of Henry Alderton and Mary Amelia (Gibbins) Alderton. He was educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and at the medical department of Columbia university (College of Physicians and Surgeons), graduating as M.D., in 1885; and he took a post-graduate course at the university of Berlin in 1890 and 1891. Since 1891 he has been in special practice in Brooklyn as surgeon of the ear, nose and throat. Alexander, James Evans, lawyer, statesman, orange and fruit grower, was born Dec. 17, 1860, near Covington, Tenn. He has been mayor of Enterprise, Fla.; postoffice inspector under President Cleveland's first administration; and for many years private secretary to United States Senator Wilkinson Call of Florida. Alexander, Joshua W., United States congressman from the third district of Missouri, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jan. 22, 1852. In 1882 he was elected representative to the general assembly of Missouri from Daviess County, and re-elected in 1884 and 1886. He was elected to the sixtieth, sixty-first and sixty-second congress.

Alexander, William DeWitt, surveyor-general of the Hawaiian Islands, was born April 2, 1833, in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1855 he graduated from Yale University, from which institution he received the degrees of A.M. and LL.D. In 1856 he was a tutor in Beloit College of Wisconsin; and in 1857 taught in the Academy at Vincennes, Ind. He became professor of Greek at Oahu College; and in 1864-71 was president of that institution of learning. In 1887-1905 he was a member of the Board of Education of Honolulu; and since 1872 has been surveyor-general of the Hawaiian Islands. He is the author of A Brief History of the Hawaiian People; History of the Later Years of the Hawaiian Monarchy; Brief Hawaiian Grammar; and Introduction to Andrews' Hawaiian Dictionary.
