Barclay, Charles Frederick, soldier, lumber merchant, congressman, was born May 9, 1844, in Owego, N. Y. He was educated in the public schools of Pennsylvania; and at the Coudersport Academy. He served during the civil war from private to captain in the one hundred and forty-ninth regiment Pennsylvania volunteers. He studied law at the University of Michigan but subsequently engaged with an elder brother in the lumber business at Sinnamahoning, Pa. In 1892 he was a presidential elector. In 1907-11 eh was representative from Pennsylvania to the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican.

Barela, Casimiro, statesman, of Colorado, was born March 4, 1847, in Mora, N. M. He received his education in New Mexico. Early in life he moved to Colorado; and is now a successful cattle and sheep grower of Trinidad, Col. In 1872-74 he was a member of the territorial legislature; and in 1875 was a member of the constitutional convention. In 1876 he became a member of the state senate of Colorado, and has filled that office for years. He has known a much longer service than any living man has ever served in the United States; and resides in Trinidad, Col.

Barhydt, Theodore Wells, railroad president, banker, capitalist, was born April 10, 1835, in Newark, N. J. He received an academic education in the Lyceum Academy of Schenectady, N. Y. In 1855 he moved to Burlington, Iowa, where he became one of the principal clerks in the postoffice. In 1859 he entered mercantile business; and since 1870 has been president of the Merchants' National Bank of Burlington, of which institution he was one of the organizers. He was one of the organizers of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railroad Company; and is now president of the Burlington and Northwestern and of the Burlington and Western Railroad Companies. He is the owner of the Delano Hotel and several other fine business buildings; was instrumental in establishing the Burlington water works; and was one of the principal promoters and builders of the first street railrods in his city. He has been president of the board. of trade; a member of the city council; and has held various other positions of trust and honor.

Barker, Lorenzo Abel, better known as "Ren." soldier, journalist, author, publisher, was born August 16, 1839, in Naples, N.Y. In 1861 he enlisted in company E, thirteenth regiment Missouri volunteers, from Battle Creek, Michigan; which afterward was changed to company D, sixty-sixth Illinois Western Sharpshooters. He was promoted sergeant. In 1884 and in 1896 he was a presidential elector from Michigan. He served as postmaster of Reed City during president Harrison's administration; and is editor and owner of the Reed City Clarion, Author and

historian of his Co. "D." from 1861 to 1865-250 page book. National delegate to the National Republican convention at Philadelphia, Pa., in 1897, that nominated McKinley and Roosevelt. Delegate to all National encampments of the G. A. A., and also to all state encampments of the G. A. R.

Barlow, Walter Jarvis, physician, was born Jan. 22, 1868, in Ossining, NY. He was engaged in the practice of medicine in New York and Los Angeles. He is now dean and professor of clinical medicine in the Los Angeles department of the University of California.

Barnes, John B., county and prosecuting attorney for Natrona county, Wyo., was born Sept. 10, 1875, in Ponca, Neb. He received a thorough education in the public schools of his native state; and in 1896 graduated with the degree of A.B. from the University of Nebraska. In 1902-05 he was superintendent of city schools at Tecamah, Neb., and now practices his profession of law. He is a member of the Republican party; and a member of the leading bar associations. He is county and prosecuting attorney for Natrona county; and resides in Casper, Wyo.

Barnes, William, chairman of the Republican State Committee of New York, was born Nov. 17, 1866, in Albany, N. Y.; and is the youngest son of William Barnes, the celebrated lawyer of Albany, N. Y. He is the editor of the Albany Evening Journal; and contributed extensively to current literature. The Evening Journal is published every evening except Sunday; and also issues a semi-weekly edition. It is one of the foremost journals in the state of New York; and always advocates the principles of the republican party. It is published by the Journal Publishing Company, of which he is one of the largest individual stockholders. He has been chairman of the executive committe of the republican state convention of New York. Since 1899 he has been surveyor of customs for the port of Albany, N. Y.

Barnett, Jacob Allen, lumber merchant, banker; born Centreville, La., March 1, 1876; son of James W. and Isabella (Scovel) Barnett; educated in Wooster University, Ohio; married, Wooster, Ohio, Sept. 12, 1899, Grace Ellen Dunlap; one son: Jacob Allen Jr. Engaged in sugar business from Jan., 1898 to June, 1906; has since been connected with The Baldwin Lumber Co., Ltd., as secretary and treasurer; stockholder, R. Barnhart, Henry A., United States congressman from the thirteenth district of Indiana, was born near Twelve Mile, Ind. He has been president and manager of the Rochester Telephone Company, and president of the National Telephone Association, holding that position for two years; was a director of the Northern Prison at Michigan City for three years; a trustee of the hospital for the insane at Longcliff for seven years, and looks after the interests of a farm in Fulton county. He is married and has two sons and a foster daughter. He was elected to fill a vacancy in the sixtieth congress, was re-elected to the sixty-first and sixty-second congresses as a democrat; and resides in Rochester, Ind.

Barrett, Charles A., merchant and statesman, was born June 21, 1852, in Sumner, Maine. He was educated in the district schools and under private tuition. He is a successful farmer, stock raiser and merchant of Athena, Ore.; and is prominently identified with the business and the public affairs of his city, county and state. For fifteen years he was the mayor and councilman of Athena, Ore. ; for three years was a school director: and has held various other positions of trust and honor. Since 1906 he has been a representative in the Oregon state legislature from the twenty-third district; has been a member on several important committees; and has always been interested and identified with all movements for the improvement of the laws and conditions of Oregon.

Barrett, John P., sailor, electrician, inventor, was born in 1837 in Auburn, N. Y. In 1845 he came with his parents to Chicago, Ill.; and was educated in the public schools of that city. For eleven years he was a sailor; then returned to Chicago and obtained a position in the fire department. In 1862-65 he was a member of the fire department of Chicago, Ill.; was then assigned to the fire alarm and telegraph department, of which he was superintendent in 1876-97; and also city electrician. He was the inventor of the fire signal joker, police patrol system, and introduced the first underground electric service. He installed the first municipal electric light system for street and river lighting. In 1893 he was chief of the electricity department at the World's Columbian exposition. In 1897 he was retired on a pension as consulting electrician by the city of Chicago.

Barrett, Reginald, organist, composer, was born Jan. 12, 1861, in London, England. He was the composer of the Light Beyond; The Holy Gates; Round the Year; and The Song of the Jester. He is now organist and choirmaster St. James' Church, Fordham, N.Y.

Barringer, Daniel Moreau, lawyer, geologist, scientist, was born May 25, 1860, in Raleigh, N.C. In 1882189 he practiced law;

and since 1891 has been a consulting and mining engineer of Philadelphia, Pa. He has published two books, one on "The Law of Mines and Mining in the United States" and the other "A Description of Minerals of Commercial Value." Notwithstanding that he is actively engaged in important mining operations, he has made some notable scientific discoveries, for example, he was the first to explain the orgin of Meteor Crater in Arizona, which has attacted much attention among men of science.

Barry, James Henry, editor, was born Feb. 15, 1856, in New York. He has been editor and publisher of The Star, a weekly newspaper, one of the first papers to advocate single tax and direct legislation through initiative and referendum.

He is a member of the Merchants Association and of the San Francisco Literary Society.

Bartch, George Washington, lawyer, and jurist of Utah, was born March 15, 1849, at Dushore, Pa. He graduated from Bloomsburg State Normal and received academic degree of master of science. For several terms he was superintendent of public schools of Shenandoah, Pa.; in 1884-86 he practiced law in Pennsylvania; in 1886-88 in Colorado; and in 1888-89 practiced law in Salt Lake City. In 1889-93 he was a probate judge of Salt Lake county by appointment of President Harrison; in 1893-96 was associate justice of the supreme bench until he resigned. In 1896-1906 he was a member of the state supreme court of Utah; and in 1899-1900 and 1905-06 was chief justice. He resigned his office as chief justice in 1906 and organized the law firm of Bartch and Bagley at Salt Lake City, where he is now engaged in active practice.

Barth, Isaac, district attorney of Arizona, was born Feb. 5, 1876, in St. Johns. He was educated in the public and high schools of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and graduated from the Indiana Law School. He has attained success in the practice of law in Arizona; and since 1897 has been chairman of the Apache County Democratic Committee. In 1904 he was delegate-at-large from Arizona to the national democratic convention held in St. Louis, Mo. He is district attorney for the fourth judicial district of Arizona.

Bartholdt, Richard, United States congressman from the tenth district of Missouri, was born Nov. 2, 1855, in Germany. He came to this country when a boy; received a classical education; learned the printing trade; and has remained a newspaper man ever since. He was connected with several eastern papers as reporter, legislative correspondent, and editor of the St. Louis Tribune. He was elected to the board of public schools of St. Louis, and in 1891 was chosen its president. He is regarded as the leader of the peace movement in the United States: was president of the Interparliamentary Union; and is now pres

ident of the arbitration group in congress. He was a member of the fifty-third, fifty-fourth, fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh, fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican. He was re-elected to the sixty-second congress from the tenth district of Missouri for the term of 1911-13; and resides in St. Louis, Mo.

Bartholomew, Pliny Webster, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 4, 1840, in Cabotville, Mass. He graduated in 1864 from the Union college of Schennectady, N.Y. He is an able lawyer of Indianapolis, Ind. He has been commisioner for New York and Connecticut, in Indiana; and trustee of the American college of Indianapolis. He was judge of the superior court in 1892-96; and is now serving his second term of 1908-14.

Bartlett, Charles Lafayette, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Jan. 31, 1853, in Monticello, Ga. He was prosecuting attorney for the Macon judical court in 1877-81. He was a member of the house of representatives of Georgia in 1882-83 and in 1884-85 and was a member of the state senate in 1889. He was elected judge of the superior court of the Macon circuit in 1893. In 1895-1911 he was a representative from Georgia to the fiftyfourth, fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh, fifty-eight, fifty-ninth, sixtieth, sixty-first and sixty-second congresses.

Bartlett, Frank L., banker; born Belfast, N.Y., December, 1858; married, July 15,, 1886, Fannie E. England. Has been engaged in banking business since 1879; cashier of Exchange National Bank of Olean, 1885, president since 1895.

Barton, Edgar R., surgeon, and phycician, was born at South Bridgton, Me., May 26, 1872; son of James H. and Laura E. (Chaplin) Barton; educated in public schools of Portland, Me., and Minneapolis, Minn.; university of Minneapolis, College of Medicine and Surgery, graduating, degree of M.D., 1901. Has been engaged in practice of medicine at Franzee since 1901. President Frazee Drug Company. Surgeon for Northern Pacific Railway company and Michols-Chisolm Lumber company. Ex-resident village council, Frazee; director Citizens' bank. Member Clay-Becker County Medical Society, Minnesota State and American Medical associations. Republican. Married at Wadena, Minn., November 13, 1901, to Miss Mabel Parker; three children: James Parker, born August 21, 1902; and Edgar R., Jr., born April 26, 1906; John Chaplin, born November 29, 1907.

Barton, James Levi, clergyman, missionary, college president, author, was born Sept. 23, 1855, in Charlotte, Vt. He received the degrees of A.B. and A.M. from Middlebury college; and in 1885 graduated from Hartford Theological seminary, having received the degree of D.D. from Middlebury college the previous year. In 1885-92 he was missionary of the American board of foreign missions at Harpoot, Turkey; in 1893 was president of the
