general manager, and since 1903 has been president, vice-president and general manager of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad Company. He was one of the directors of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company; and resides in St. Louis, Mo.

Allen, Charles Herbert, merchant, state senator, congressman, governor; was born April 15, 1848, in Lowell, Mass. He held several local offices in Lowell; was a representative in the Massachusetts state legislature in 1881 and 1882; and was a state senator in 1883. In 1885-89 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the forty-ninth and fiftieth congresses. In 1891 he was Republican candidate for governor; and in 1898 became assistant secretary of the navy. In 1900-04 he was governor of Porto Rico.

Allen, Frederick Hobbes, United States diplomat, was born May 30, 1858, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is a son of the late Hon. Elisha Hunt Allen, the eminent diplomat and congressman. He studied in Germany and Switzerland and under private tutors. In 1880 he graduated with the degree of A.B. from Harvard University; and in 1893 graduated with the degrees of A.M. and LL.B. from that institution of learning. In 1882 he was secretary to the Hawaiian legation and in 1883 was charge de affairs of the Hawaiian legation. He resigned; and in 1883 was admitted to the bar. He has been corporation counsel of the village of Pelham Manor; and also served as president of the village. He is chairman of the Democratic County Committee of Westchester County, N.Y.; and is the senior member of the law firm of Allen and Camman of New York City.

Allen, George H., business president of New York City, has gained his position in New York city through the arduous labors of mercantile life, coupled with native shrewdness and energy, and his partnership in the importing firm of Paris, Allen and Comany, of which he is now senior partner. He has also been for a number of years president of W. A. Gaines and Company, distillers, in Frankfort, Ky., incorporated with a capital of $600,000, who own the Old Crow and Hermitage distilleries. He is a member of the New York Athletic Club.

Allen, Henry Tureman, soldier, governor, author, was born April 13, 1859, in Sharpsburg, Ky. He attended Georgetown College of Kentucky; and in 1882 graduated from the United States Military Academy. He has been a cavalry officer; in 1885-86 was engaged in explorations in Alaska; 1881-90 was instructor in languages at the military academy; and in 1890-99 was military attache at St. Petersburg and Berlin, except while serving in the Cuban campaign. In 1901 he commanded the forty-third regiment United States volunteer infantry on the island of Leyte, of which island he was civil governor. In 1901 he began the organization of the Philippine constabulary; and in 1903 was made brigadier-general and chief of constabulary. In 1904 he

was detailed as military observer with the Japanese forces. Since 1908 he has been acting superintendent of the Yellowstone national park, Wyo. He is the author of Military System of Sweden; and other works.

Allen, John Comfort, American consul, was born in Black Creek, Allegany county, N.Y., August 19, 1869; farm work up to 1887; student Westbrook Commercial college, Olean, N.Y., 1887; railroad station agent Mexico and Central America 188898; traveling representative and auditor for oil company in Mexico 1898-1902; manager agricultural plantation in southern Mexico; manager transfer company Mexico City, Mexico; originator of a system of advertising, selling and handling export trade from the United States to Latin America; writer of social and business conditions in Latin America and editor and publisher of magazine in Spanish circulating throughout Mexico, dedicated as an advertising medium for American manufacturers. Acecpted position in 1910 in the United States Consular Service and was appointed Deputy Consul-General at Monterey, Mexico.

Allen, John Jervis, bank president, was born Feb. 22, 1859, in Ireland. He has been prominently identified with all bank positions and is now vice-president of the Citizens National Bank of Monaco, Pa.; and president of the Aliquippa National Bank of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Rochester Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; and numerous other fraternal and patriotic orders.

Allen, Lemuel, state representative of Nevada, was born April 12, 1839, in Harrison County, Ohio. He was educated in the dis-. trict schools of Iowa. In 1870 he began the practice of law; and for many years he practiced his profession in St. Clair, Nev. He moved to Fallon, Nev., where he has attained success as an attorney and as a rancher. For twelve years he served as prosecuting governor of the state of Nevada. He is a prominent member of the Democratic party; is now serving his eleventh term of 1911-13 as a state representative in the Nevada legislature; and resides in Fallon, Nev.

Allen, Robert McDowell, head of state food and drug division, Lexington, Ky., was born Oct. 29, 1878, in Edinburg, Mo. He was educated at the Henry-Jessee Academy of Versailles, Ky.; attended the Lexington City High School and in 1900 graduated with the degree of A.B. from the Kentucky State University. Since 1901 he has been engaged in the practice of law. In 1900 he was appointed to a position in the pure food inspection work of the Kentucky agricultural experiment station; was later made the head of the division of state food inspection of the station; and an advisory member of the Kentucky state board of health. In 1902-08 he was secretary and a member of the executive committee of the association of the state and national food and dairy

department. In 1904 he was secretary of the international food congress held in St. Louis, Mo. He was special counsel in certain United States government pure food prosecutions under President Roosevelt's administration, and head of the division of food and drug inspection at the Kentucky agricultural experiment station at Lexington; and resides in Lexington, Ky.

Allen, William R., lieutenant-governor of the State of Montana, was born July 25, 1871, in Montana. He was educated in the public schools of that State. He is prominently identified with the business affairs of Montana; is a successful lumberman; and also has large mining interests. He is a member of the Republican party; has served two terms as a member of the house of representatives in the eighth and tenth assemblies of the Montana legislature; and is a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, and other fraternal and patriotic orders. He is lieutenant-governor of the State of Montana; is now serving his first term of 1909-13; and resides in Helena, Mont.

Allis, Edward Phelps, manufacturer and scientist, was born Sept. 14, 1851, in Milwaukee, Wis. He is vice-president of the Edward P. Allis Company. In 1885 he established the Lale laboratory in Milwaukee, Wis., which in 1893 was transferred to Menton, France, where it is known as the Allis Research Laboratory.

Albread, James Isaac, lawyer, jurist, was born Sept. 29, 1858, in Darke County, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools of his native county; and at the high school of Greenville, Ohio. He soon attained success in the practice of law. In 1895 he became judge of the Circuit Court of Ohio; and since 1903 has been judge of the Court of Common Pleas of the State of Ohio, receiving the re-election to that office in 1908.

Ambler, Benjamin Mason, lawyer, was born Jan. 14, 1850, in Winchester, Va. He graduated in several schools from the university of Virginia and studied law under judge Richard Parker of Winchester, Va.; and in 1874 was admitted to the bar. He settled at Parkersburg, W.Va., where he formed a partnership with W. W. Van Winkle, as Van Winkle and Ambler. In 1879-81 he was city attorney; and in 1882 was admitted to the supreme court of the United States. In 1888-89 he was president of the West Virginia bar association. He is a member of the American bar association; delegate to international congress of jurists and lawyers, St. Louis, 1904, and was a delegate to the general convention of protestant episcopal church in 1892 to 1910.

Ambauen, Andrew Joseph, priest, author, poet, was born March 7, 1847, in Switzerland. He received a thorough education in Jesuit colleges; and later was given the degree of Ph.D. After his ordination to the priesthood in 1872, he worked for about thirteen years in various pioneer mission stations in the diocese of Milwaukee, Wis. In 1886 he was appointed to St. Joseph's congregation at Dodgeville, Wis., where he has ever since faithfully ministered for nearly a quarter of a century. In the intervals of exacting pastoral duties he has contributed extensively to church and popular literature. Among his works are The Friend of Youth; Roses of Heaven; and Guide to Our Celestia' Home, which are all in the German language. In English he is the author of The Devout Companion; Forget-Me-Nots; The People's Friend, or Hints on How to Preserve One's Physical, Mental and Moral Health; and Floral Apostles, or What the Flowers Say to Thinking Man; and Jewels of History.

Ames, Albert Alonzo, physician and statesman of Minneapolis, Minn., was born Jan. 18, 1842, in Garden Prarie, Ill. In 1852 he moved with his parents to Minneapolis when it was still a portion of the Fort Snelling reservation of Minnesota. In 1862 he graduated in medicine and at once was made assistant surgeon of the seventh regiment of Minnesota volunteer infantry. He was with

his regiment for three years; and in 1864 was promoted to the rank of major-surgeon. In 1868-74 he was managing editor of the Alta California, the leading paper on the Pacific Coast; and since 1874 has practiced medicine in Minneapolis. In 1867 he was eleted a representative to the Minnesota state legislature; and in 1876-90 was mayor of Minneapolis, Minn. In 1886 he was the democratic nominee for governor of Minnesota; and subsequently was the unsuccessful candidate for the United States. congress and for lieutenant-governor of Minnesota.

Ames, Butler, United States congressman from the fifth district of Massachusetts, was born in 1872 in Lowell, Mass. Since 1896 he has been agent of the Wamesit Power Company of Lowell, Mass. During the Spanish-American war he was lieutenant and adjutant of the sixth Massachusetts volunteers. In 1897-99 he was for three years a member of the Massachusetts state legislature. He was a member of the fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses from Massachusetts as a Republican. He was re-elected to the sixty-second congress from the fifth district of Massachusetts for the term of 1911-13; and resides in Lowell, Mass.

Ames, Henry, business president of St. Louis, Mo., was born Nov. 20, 1855, in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated at Wyman Institute and at Washington University of St. Louis, Mo.; attended the Pennsylvania military academy of Chester, Pa.; and graduated from the Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Va. He has been vice-president of Lindell Hotel Association; secretary the New Lindell Hotel Company of St. Louis, Mo.; and director of Belcher's Sugar Refinery Company of St. Louis, Mo. He has been interested in military affairs; and major of the first regiment Missouri national guard. He is now a successful farmer and agriculturist; and proprietor of Maples farm of Webster Groves, St. Louis County, Mo.
