LEGAL NEWS.

"We are now printing a law book of about three hundred page!1, for a publishing house, written by a woman."— Chicago Legal Newt.

"A City Solicitor" has addressed the following to the Times:—" The Long Vacation At Judges' Chambebs. —Sir,—Most of your readers are, no doubt, aware that since the Act abolishing imprisonment for debt came into operation, the process adopted for enforcing payment of judgment debts, after execution against the debtor's chattels has proved ineffectual, is by judgment summons. This summons must be beard by a judge wbo, upon sufficient evidence of the judgment debtor's ability and failure to pay the judgment debt, has power to commit him to prison for a period not exceeding six weeks. This morning I received instructions from a firm of solicitors in the country, for whom I am London agent, to issue a judgment summon?, and it was particularly pointed out that the chances of succeeding in obtaining payment by this process depended upon the summons being heard at an early date. I attended myself to issue the summons, and, much to my astonishment, was informed that the 2nd of November next, upwards of ten weeks hence, was the earliest day that could be appointed for hearing the summons. This, I was informed, was because of the Long Vacation and of the uncertainty as to what will be done when the present Vacation Judge ceases to attend at chambers next month. Surely this is a state of things which should not exist, seeing that there are about twenty judges, any one of whom might, if he liked, assist to dispose of the pressing business at judges' chambers."

"Mr. F. T. Fox, one of the contributors to this journal, recently received the letter given below, from Lord Justioe Bramwell, in acknowledgment of a oopy of the Central Law Journal containing an article sustaining his view of the right of action for death by wrongful aot at oommon law, as expressed in Otborne v. Oilletl (L. R. 8 Ex. 88). Enclosed was a photograph of the learned Lord Jnstioe in his judicial wig and robes, whioh give the picture a very unique and antiquarian appearanoe to oisatlantio professional eyes. The letter is as follows :—' Four Elms, Eden Bridge, Kent, June 26, 1881.—Dear Sir,—I am much obliged to you for the number of the Central Law Journal. I have read your artiole with great interest. I am glad to eee that on your side of the Atlantio the law is dealt with on higher considerations than profit and loss. I am somewhat ashamed to think that you, for mere love of our soience, have brought more research and learning to bear on the question you discuss than I did when it was before me as a matter of duty. I am prone to decide cases ou principle, and when I think I have got the right one (I hope it is not presumption), like the Caliph Omar, I think authorities wrong or needless. However, it is gratifying to be confirmed by them, as you confirm my opinion in Osborne v. Gillett. 1 am also very much gratified by the kind and flattering way in which you speak of me. Perhaps the reason yon know me in America as well as you do is the length of time I have been on the bench—twenty-five and a half years—longer than anyone else now living by about four years, so that I have had the time to be more chronicled than anyone else, and I suppose I have made an average use of it, I can assure you I am very glad to ha»e the good opinion of lawyers on your side of the water— none less that they are young. I may, without vanity, say that all the "young ones at our bar consider me their particular friend. I was in your city in 1853 only one night,

during a long-vacation gamble; but for the twenty-five and a half years, and about forty-eight more, I would pay the States another visit. Repeating the expression of pleasure at your communication, yours faithfully, G. Bbamwell.' "— Central Law Journal.

H_ _ THE ORIGINAL NM-MCOMlie

FDOZONE BEVERAGE. PURE AND SPARKLINGREFRESHING AND INVIGORATING. NEARLY EVERT SCHOOLBOY KNOWS THAT THERE ARE DIVISIONS OF THE EARTH THAT RELATE TO THE TEMPERATURE OF THE LATITUDES, CALLED ZONES : AND THAT THESE HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED AS FIVE IN NUMBER—VIZ., ONE TORRID, TWO FRIGID, AND TWO TEMPERATE. IK THE YEAR THE NEW 1876 ANOTHER TEMPERATE ZONE WAS DISCOVERED, WAS BROUGHT TO THE RECOGNITION OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL WORLD, AND NAMED EMPERATE Hedozone. WHAT HEDOZONE HAS TO DO WITH THE DIVISIONAL PORTIONS OF THE SURFACE OF THE GLOBE IS SO FAR THAT IT FORTIFIES MANZONE, KIND IN RESISTING THE EXTREMES OF TEMPERA.
