office! What confusion can there be to prevent your delivering to the judges copies of papers delivered to yon for -that purpose? It is a very simple matter so far as affects yourself. These papers are delivered to you to be delivered to us j why were they not so delivered? What did you do with them p'' The clerk said he had Riven them to the messenger to take to the judges. Lord Coleridge then sent for the messenger, who admitted receiving papers from the clerk, but could not identify them, and on further inquiry it appeared that there was no personal manual delivery of the papers by the clerk to the messenger, but they were left on a mantlepiece for him. On the whole bis lordship said to the clerk that there had been neglect, and the court bad been pnt to great inconvenience, and if it happened again he would see what could be done to punish such neglect. In the meantime solicitors had better attend to his lordship's announcement of the arrangement to leave the copies uf cases deposited at the Crown Office at that office—that is, copies for the judges as well as the cases themselves which are depositedjor delivered there.

AN IMPORTANT CONVENIENCE TO LAW WRITERS AND SOLICITORS.
STEPHENS' SCARLET INK FOR STEEL PENS.
This new Ink supplies the demand continually made but never before met, for a Red Ink which is nuinjured by Steel or other Metallic Pens. Steel Pens left in this ink for months do not impair the hcautv of its colour, nor are the Pens in the least corroded by it. The existing Red Inks rapidly destroy Steel Pens, and lose their red colour it used with other than Gold or Quill Pens. This new colour is a very rich scarlet red of great beauty. The colour of this ink is not affected by use upon parchment, and is consequently of great value to Solicitors and Draughtsmen.

There Is No Foundation for the doubt which has been recently publicly expressed as to whether the report of the Procedure Committee will be published. Both the Lord Chancellor in the one House, and the Attorney-General in the other, have promised to lay thee report on the table. With regard to the suggestion that the judges will make rules based on. the report before the latter is published, we may point out that as all the members of the Rule Committee of Judges (with one exception) are away on circuit, and the Long Vacation will commence before their return, there is no prospect of any meeting of the committee being held to consider any proposals which may be made.
The Chiep Clerks at present attached to the Master of the Bolls will remove in the course of the Long Vacation to the Boyal Courts of Justice.
The Chamber vacation business in the Chancery Division will be transacted, it is understood, by the chief clerks at present attached to the Master of the Bolls.
After The Passing of the Judicature Act Amendment Bill, it is anticipated that an order will be made transferring the chief clerks now attached to the Master of the Bolls to Mr. Justice Kay.
The List of chancery causes in which there are dormant funds was posted up at the Boyal Courts of Justice on Saturday last, and will be found in the corridor outside the Chancery Pay Office.
The Death of Lord Hatherley leaves Lord Cairns the only ex-Lord Chancellor in receipt of a pension, a state of things which is almost unprecedented in reoent times, and which presents a remarkable contrast to the condition of the House of Lords in the year 1873, when no fewer than five such pensions were payable.
It Is Satisfactory to find from the Judicature Act Amendment Bill, which we print elsewhere, that a judge of first instance in the Chancery Division is to be appointed in place of the Master of the Bolls; and it is also matter of congratulation that he is to be appointed "immediately after the passing" of the Act; for the result, it may be presumed, will be that both of the vacation judges this year will be familiar frith the matters with which they have to deal in court.
Professional Opinion, whieh, happily, has a powerful representative in the House of Lords in Lord Cairns, has proved fatal to the proposal to constitute journeymen judges of the Court of Appeal. It is to be withdrawn, and we hope will never be heard of again. Its origin was revealed by the Lord Chancellor when he said that "from the communications which he had had with the judges, he was led to believe that, especially in the Queen's Bench Division, the opinion prevailed that such an arrangement would conduce to greater harmony." If by "greater harmony" the Lord Chancellor's informants meant greater tenderness in dealing with the decisions of judges of first instance, this is not a quality whioh the profession desires in a court of appeal. The real objection to the proposal is that which Lord Cairns had the courage to avow — "that it assumed that all the primary judges were fit to sit in the Court of Appeal. Tha best men were required for that court. The proper way of getting the best men was to choose from time to time the most distinguished primary judges and promote them to the Court of Appeal. But if all the primary judges were to be treated as eligible for the Court of Appeal the popular respect for that court would be lowered."
So Many Judges of real eminence and worth have died within a comparatively short space of time, each of whom has, with the most perfect propriety, been spoken of in terms of praise and respect, that there is a fear lest, among some persons at any rate, it may seem almost a matter of course that lawyers should
