INTERNATIONAL SPECIALS.

Epinard, winner of many races in Europe. was brought to the United States in 1924 by his owner, Pierre Wertheimer of Paris, France. The horse took part in three races but failed to come in first in any of them, though the first two contests were close. In the first race at Belmont park, New York, Sept. 1, Wise Counselor, owned by Frederick C. Burton of Chicago, was first with Epinard second, threequarters of a length behind. The race, which was at six furlongs, was witnessed by 60,000 persons, including the prince of Wales. The time was 1:11. The race was worth $29.000 to the winner. F. Keogh rode Wise Counselor and E. Haynes Epinard.

The second race in which Epinard was a contender was run at the Aqueduct track, New York, Sept. 27, in the presence of 40.000 spectators. This time Ladkin, owned by August Belmont, was the victor by a nose over Epinard with Wise Counselor third. The distance, 1 mile, was made in 1:36%. The value of the race to the winner was $28,750 Clarence Kummer rode Ladkin and E. Haynes Epinard.

The third race at 14 miles was run at Latonia, Ky., Oct. 11, with 50.000 spectators present. The victor in this contest was Sara zen, owned by Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt, which covered the distance in the fast time of 2:00%. Epinard was a length and a half behind. The race was for a purse of $50.000. Sarazen was ridden by G. Babin and Epinard by E. Haynes.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. William T. Tilden II. of Philadelphia won the national tennis championship in singles for the fifth time in succession in the tournament held on the courts of the West Side Tennis club, Forest Hills, N. Y.. Aug. 25-Sept. 2, 1924. His opponent in the finals was William M. Johnston of California, whom he defeated 6-1, 9-7, 6-2.

The national championships in doubles were decided on the courts of the Longwood Cricket club. Boston, Aug. 17-23, 1924. Robert G. and Howard O. Kinsey of San Francisco in the final match defeated Gerald Patterson and Patrick O'Hara Wood of Australia 7-6, 5-7, 7-9. 6-3, 6-4. The mixed doubles championship title was taken by Miss Hefen Wills and Vincent Richards when they defeated Mrs. Molla B. Mallory and William T. Tilden II., in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0.

WESTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS. The western tennis championship tournament of 1924 was held on the courts of the Woodstock club, Indianapolis, June 30-July 6, with the following results in the final rounds: Men's singles-William T. Tilden II. defeated Johnny Hennessey 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Men's doubles-Gerald Patterson and Richard Schlesinger defeated Johnny Hennessey and A. C. Chapin 7-5, 8-6, 6-4.

Women's singles-Miss Marian Leighton defeated Mrs. Leo Alter 6-2, 6-4.

Women's doubles-Miss Leighton and Mrs. Alter defeated Mrs. Ruth Riese and Mrs. R. C. Stewart 6-0, 6-1.

DAVIS INTERNATIONAL CUP.

As a result of the elimination contests the Australian team again became the challengers in 1924 for the Davis international cup. emblematic of the world's tennis championship. The deciding matches were played on the courts of the Germantown (Pa.) Cricket club Sept. 11, 12 and 13. William T. Tilden II. defeated Gerald L. Patterson of the Australian team in the first match 6-4. 6-2, 6-2. In the second match Vincent -Richards of New York defeated Pat O'Hara Wood of Australia 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. In the third match William T. Tilden II. and William M. Johnston defeated Gerald Patterson and Pat O'Hara Wood in the doubles 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. In the fourth match Tilden defeated Wood 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and in the fifth and final match Richards defeated Patterson 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
