Settle and secure an annuity upon the Right A.D. 1928. Honourable John Henry Whitley in consideration of his eminent services.

Most Gracious Sovereign,

WE

HEREAS the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland did, by an humble address to Your Majesty, pray Your Majesty 5 that You would be graciously pleased to confer some signal mark of Your Royal Favour upon the Right Honourable John Henry Whitley, Speaker of the House of Commons, for his eminent services during the important period in which he had with such distinguished 10 ability and dignity presided in the Chair of the House, and did assure Your Majesty that whatever expense Your Majesty should think fit to be incurred upon that account the said House would make good the same:

And whereas Your Majesty, in answer to the said 15 address, was graciously pleased to declare that Your Majesty was desirous, in compliance with the wishes of your faithful Commons, to confer upon the said Right Honourable John Henry Whitley some signal mark of Your Royal Favour, but as the same could not be effectu20 ally granted and secured without the concurrence of Parliament, Your Majesty recommended to the House of Commons the adoption of such measures as might be necessary for the accomplishment of that purpose:

Now we, Your Majesty's most dutiful and loyal 25 subjects, the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in Parliament assembled,

A.D. 1928. have resolved that the annual sum of four thousand pounds be granted to Your Majesty out of the Consolidated Fund of the United Kingdom, to begin upon the day upon which the Right Honourable John Henry Whitley, late Speaker of the House of Commons, ceased 5 to hold the office of Speaker of the House of Commons, to be settled in the most beneficial manner upon, and to continue during the life of, him the said Right Honourable John Henry Whitley, and do most humbly beseech Your Majesty that it may be enacted, and be it enacted 10 by the King's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Annuity of 4,000l. to be paid to the Right Honourable

1. One annuity of four thousand pounds shall be 15 charged upon and payable quarterly out of the Consolidated Fund of the United Kingdom, or the growing produce thereof, to the Right Honourable John Henry John Henry Whitley, during his natural life, beginning on the day upon which he ceased to hold the office of Speaker of the 20 House of Commons:

Short title.

Provided that one half of the annuity shall abate and be suspended during any period that the said Right Honourable John Henry Whitley hereafter holds any place, office or employment under His Majesty of equal 25 or greater amount in salary, profits or emolument than the amount of the annuity.

2. This Act may be cited as Mr. Speaker's Retirement Act, 1928.
