1913-14 to 1923-24 95. The amounts allocated from Estate, etc., Duties to the Local Taxation Accounts in the years are shown on pages 124 and 125. These contributions are paid in the first instance into the Exchequer as required by the Finance Act, 1907, and the necessary payments to the Local Taxation Accounts are made out of the Consolidated Fund. The contributions for the year 1923-24 are shown in the following table, together with the fund out of which they arise, and the manner in which the amounts are determined : Table 85.-Probate, etc., Duties and Estate Duty allocated to the Local Taxation Accounts. 1923-24. * Under the Tithe Rentcharge (Rates) Act, 1899, a portion of this grant is specifically applied in aid of the Rates on Tithe Rentcharge attached to benefices in England-one moiety of such rates being paid by the Crown. The total amount so applied in the year was £378,887. BETTING DUTY. 96. The Select Committee appointed by the House of Commons on 1st May, 1923, to consider the question of imposing a duty on betting, asked us to lay evidence before them as to the profits assessed to Income Tax of Bookmakers and Turf Commission Agents. A Proof of Evidence was accordingly prepared and submitted to the Committee, showing for each of the years 1919-20 to 1922-23 inclusive, the numbers of Individuals, Firms, and Companies, and the amount of their profits, so assessed, classified according to the amount of the assessment. The Proof also dealt with the relation between profit and turnover, and a series of calculations was put forward with the object of assisting the Committee in their endeavour to ascertain the annual volume of betting in the country. 97. Evidence was given before the Committee by our Chairman, and our Director of Statistics and Intelligence, Mr. W. H. Coates. A full account of the proceedings is contained in the Report of the Select Committee, published as a House of Commons paper (No. 139 of 1923).
