1861, in Baltimore, Md. He was educated at the Johns Hopkins University. He is professor of Geology at the University of Illinois. Since 1886 he has been associate geologist of the United States Geological Survey, and business editor of Economic Geology. He was formerly professor of Geology of the Colby College.
