Appleton, R. Ross, Jr., Treasurer. Director and Manager, 91 Franklin Street, New York City, was born in 1889 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was educated at the Hill School, and Yale College. He is now treasurer of the R. R. Appleton Company of New York; and president of the Meadow Brook Mills of New York. He is a member of the Yale Club, the Hamilton Club, and the Rembrant Club. In 1922 he married Miss Janet Burns, who died in 1923; and they have one daughter, and reside at 146 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Araneta, Gregorio, Realtor, of 28 Juan Luna, Manila, Hawaii, was born April 19, 1869, in Molo, Ill. He received the degree of A.B. from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, and the degree of LL.M. from University of St. Thomas. He is engaged in the profession of law attorney of Bank of P.I.; the Mercantile Bank of China, the Insular Life and Assurance Company, the Philippine Guaranty Company, the Yu Biao Sontua, Germinal, and other firms. He is also professor of law at the University of St. Tomas; a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Philippine Islands, the Insular Life and Assurance Company, Philippine Guaranty Company, Manila Jockey Club, and others. He was prosecuting attorney of Manila in 1895, a member

of the advisory board of the Philippine Islands in 1898, secretary of the Filipino Congress, secretary of Justice in Cabinet of Aguinaldo, Justice of the Supreme Court in 1899, atttorney-general Philippine Islands in 1906-07, member of the Philippine Commission, and Secretary of Finance and Justice in 1907. He is a member of the Philippine Bar Association, the American Bar Association. In 1896 he married Miss Carmen Zaragoza; and they have a family of seven sons and six daughters, and reside at 1030 R. Hidalgo, Manila, P.I.

Arbuckle Joseph, Counsellor-at-law, of 71 Broadway, New York City, was born on Feb. 1, 1872, in Warrensburg, Mo. He was educated at Sidney, Ohio public schools. He has been president of the Cincinnati, Findlay and Fort Wayne Railway Company. In 1922 he married Miss Leonora Maccabe; and they reside at 16 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn.

Archbald, Robert Wodrow, Lawyer and Jurist, of Scranton, Pa., was born Sept. 10, 1848, in Carbondale, Pa. He was educated in the public schools of Scranton, the Flushing Institute, Yale College class of 1871. He is now practicing law in Scranton, Pa. Ardley, James H., Banker, of Bank of Commerce, New York City, was born on Sept. 14, 1875, in Dallas, Texas. He was educated in the public schools, and at the University of Texas. He is a member of the Bankers Club, the Blind Brook Club, the Westchester Club, and of the

Armitage, Clyde Foster, a Methodist Clergyman and Author, of 150 Fifth Avenue, New York City, was born on Sept. 10, 1886, in Elizabeth, Ill. He received the degree of A.B. from Northwestern University, and the degree of S.T.B. from Boston University School of Theology. He is executive for Church Relations, with Near East Relief, and was in charge of war work for all Protestant denominations during the WorldWar, from April 1917 to November 1918, serving as secretary of Federal Council of Churches, and of the General WarTime Commission of the Churches. He is editor of Better Things; co-editor of The Way to Win, Studies for Ministers since 1916; and author of Survey of the Ohio Methodism. He is minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church; and member of the New Hampshire Conference. He has been secretary of the Laymen's Missionary Movement, Methodist Episcopal Church; and lecturer with Radcliffe Chautauquas. He is a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce the Clergy Club of New York City, the Young Men's Christian Association,the National League of Masonic Clubs, and other organizations. In 1911 he married Miss Ethel Fowee of Orleans, Ind.; and they reside at 316 Portner Apartments, Washington, D.C.

Arms, Edward Wright, Civil Engineer, Inventor and Genealogist, of Troy, N.Y., was born in 1845 in Troy, N.Y. Armstrong, A. Joseph, College Professor, of Waco, Texas, was born in Louisville, Ky., March 29, 1873. He received the degree of A.B. in 1902, and the degree of A.M. in 1904 from the Wabash College, and the degree of Ph.D. in 1908 from the University of Pennsylvania; and in 1909-10 was student of British Museum. Arneson, Ben Albert, College Professor, of Delaware, Ohio, was born on May 22, 1883, in Barneveld, Wis. He was educated at the Whitewater Normal School and at the University of Wisconsin. He is professor of political science and head of the department of the Ohio Wesleyan University. He is lecturer on Chautauqua for several museums. He is member of the American Political Science Association, and a member of various clubs and fraternal societies. In 1909 he married Miss Elsie Baade; and they have one daughter, and reside in Delaware, Ohio.

Arnold, Maurice, Composer, 10 West Forty-fifth Street, New York City, was born on Jan. 19, 1865, in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated at Cincinnati, Cologne, Berlin; pupil of M. Bruch and Dvorak. He is composer of the Last King, and The Maid from New York. He is also musical director of Harmonio Society. In 1922 he married Miss Johanna Appelboom.

Ashbrook, William A., Banker, Statesman, of Johnstown, Ohio, was born on July 1, 1867, in Johnstown, Ohio. Since 1886 he has published the Independent of Johnstown, Ohio. He is now president of the Johnstown Bank. For three years he was secretary of the National Editorial Association of United States; for several years he was secretary of the National Editorial Association of the for several years he was postmaster of his town; has been a representative of the Ohio State Legislature; and for fourteen years he was member of Congress. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, is an Odd Fellow, an Elk, and a

prominent Mason. In 1920 he married Miss Marie G. Swank; and they have a family of one son and one daughter and reside in Johnstown, Ohio.

Ashe, Samuel A'Court, Lawyer, Journalist and Author, of the Federal Building, Raleigh, N.C., was born on Sept. 13, 1840, in Wrightsville, N.C. He is editor of the Historian, and author of the Biographical History of North Carolina in eight volumes, and History of North Carolina in two volumes. He is clerk of the United States District Committee. He has been expert for the Democratic United States Senate Committee. He is a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. In 1871 he married Miss Hannah Willard; and they have a family of four sons and three daughters, and reside in Raleigh, N.C.

Ashmore, Otis, Educator, Lecturer and Author, of Savannah, Ga., was born on March 6, 1853, in Lincoln County, Ga. In 1874-1887 he taught in several schools in Georgia, and in 1887-96 he taught science in the High School of Savannah. In 1896 he was elected superintendent of schools of Savanah, which position he held till 1916, when he retired. He has made astronomical calculations for the Grier's Almanac since 1882, and is the author of A Manual of Pronunciation, and many articles on education and scientific subjects. In 1884 he married Miss Editha G. Collins of Harlem, Ga.; and they reside at 909 Whitaker Street.

Ashworth, Lewis Jackson, Realtor and Banker, of Huntington, W.Va., was born on Nov. 7, 1851, in Putnam County, W. Va. He was educated in the Putnam County district schools, until he was sixteen years of age when he began teaching in the county schools. He is manager of the Huntington Chair Factory; the owner of a mattress factory in Huntington; and the owner of a tannery in St. Albans, W.Va. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Education, the Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias. In 1882 he married Miss Fannie Middleton, who died in 1894. They had three children. In 1895 he married Miss Lillie Healan, who died in 1898, leaving one child.

Ashworth, Walter C., Physician, of Glenwood, N.C., was born on Sept. 7, 1868, in Ashboro, N.C. In 1892 he received the degree of M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, Md. He has been postmaster of Glenwood; and is now superintendent of the Glenwood Park Sanitarium. He is a member of the North Carolina Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. In 1894 he married Miss Birdie Sapp; and they have a family of two daughters, and reside in Winston-Salem; and Greensboro, N.C.

Askenstedt, Fritz Conrad, Physician and Educator, of 1210 Fourth Avenue, Louiville, Ky., was born on Jan. 18, 1865, in Wenersborg, Sweden. In 1889 he received the degree of M.D. from the Pulte Medical College. He is president. of Scandinavian Association of Louisville; and has been president of the Kentucky Homeo-Medical Society. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Institute of Homeopathy, the Kentucky State Medical Society, the Kentucky Homeopathic Medical Society, and the Jefferson County Medical Society. In 1904 he married Miss Lillian S. Bryan; and they reside at 1210 Fourth Avenue.

Atherton, Percy Lee, Composer, of the Hotel Bristol, Copley Square, Boston, Mass., was born on Sept. 25, 1871, in Boston, Mass. He was educated at Phillips Andover, and Harvard College He is the author of an opera comique, in one act, the Maharaja, and of numerous other works in chamber music and many songs. He is a member of the Harvard Clubs of New York and Boston, and of the St. Botolph Club.

Atherton, Thomas Henry, Architect,of 139 South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., was born Jan. 16, 1884, in WilkesBarre, Pa. Atkins, Arthur B., Lawyer, of Napoleon, S.Dak., was born in 1884 in Columbia, S.D. He was educated at the University of Minnesota. He is State's Attorney for Logan County; and counsel for the First National Bank and Merchants Bank of Napoleon, N.D. In 1913 he married Miss Anna Nelson; and they have a family of one son and two daughters, and reside in Napoleon, N.D.

Atkinson, Albert Algernon, Educator and Author, of Athens, Ohio, was born on March 7, 1867, in Nelsonville, Ohio. Since 1895 he has been professor of physics and an electrical engineer of the Ohio University. He is the author of Electrical and Magnetic Calculations, and other works. He is also teacher and principal in the public schools. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Electrical Engineering, and the Ohio Academy of Science. In 1892 he married Miss Julia A. McDaniel, and they have one daughter, and reside in Athens, Ohio.

Atkinson, Fred L., Manufacturer, of 99 State Street, Newburyport, Mass..was born on Nov. 12, 1856, in Charlestown, Maine. He was educated in Newburysport, Mass. Atkinson, James L., Physician and Surgeon, of Poplar, Mont., was born on Aug. 17, 1856, in Mt. Vernon, Ill. He was educated at the Missouri Medical College, and received the degree of M.D. He is practicing physician and surgeon of Poplar, Mont. He is surgeon for the G. N. Railroad Company. Atterbury, Anson Phelps, Clergyman and Author, of New York City, was born on June 18, 1854, in New York City. He was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover and Yale College, and Andover and Union Theological Seminaries. He is pastor emeritus West Park Presbyterian Church of New York City. He is also president of the New York Society for Suppression of Vice; and a director of the Union Theological Seminary. He is a member of the Century Association of New York. He married Miss Van Rensselaer; and they reside at 580 Park Avenue, New York City.
