PREFACE. These statistics are arranged on the same general plan as those published in recent years under the title of Statistics of Public Education. While Part I of this Report covers the period from 1st August, 1926 to 31st December, 1927 (see paragraph 13), the statistics in Part II relate for the most part to statistical or academic years ending on 31st March or 31st July, 1927, as further indicated in the Explanatory Notes. The last volume of Statistics of Public Education, that for 1925-26, included a number of special tables, mainly of a historical nature, showing comparative figures for a series of years. As it is the Board's practice not to publish such tables annually, but every five years, they have been omitted from the present volume. A few tables of minor interest to the Local Education Authorities and the general public have also been omitted. As in former years; the titles of any new tables are printed in italics in the Table of Contents. Combined figures are in general given for England and Wales, but in selected tables separate figures for England and for Wales are given in addition. (Tables 3, 4, 8, 25, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 42). In some other tables separate figures, or totals only, are given for Wales, the totals being printed in italic type. (Tables 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 17, 46.) The tables should be read in the light of the explanatory notes. In addition to the summary tables included in this volume the Board publish from time to time such area statistics as may appear desirable in the form of separate pamphlets.
