This is indeed the day of dismay and moral crisis. Yet, this is also a great opportunity for America, an opportunity in which the American people can demonstrate America's true greatness in faith and courage. Historically great peoples have proved their greatness not during normal situations but in crises. This is the time the American people must act as a great people who put trust in God. Then this day will be a day of new hope and unification. "In God We Traust." In these four words lie America's key to survival and prosperity. America must live the will of God, and God's command at this crossroads in American history is Forgive, Love, and Unite! You coordinated the project to place the ads in the 12 major newspapers? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I took over in midstream. I did not coordinate the beginning of the project but coordinated the final stages of it. Mr. FRASER. Do you know where the money was obtained to pay for those ads? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I don't know. Mr. FRASER. Well, you were involved in expenditures of money in connection with the National Prayer and Fast Committee, weren't you? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Yes. Mr. FRASER. Where did you get the funds for that activity? Mr. FEFFERMAN. When I was there often the money came from the Unification Church. Also, we did direct mailings to a mailing list that we developed. Mr. FRASER. The money that came from the Unification Church came to whom, who received it? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I am not sure, sir. Mr. FRASER. How do you know it came? Mr. FEFFERMAN. From the account of the National Prayer and Fast Committee. Mr. FRASER. And how did the money get into that account? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I don't recall exactly how all the moneys got into the account. The money that I am certain of came from direct mailings that we did. Mr. FRASER. Did somebody keep the books of the account? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Yes, sir. Mr. FRASER. Who was that? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I would have to check our list of officers. Mr. FRASER. You don't have any recollection now as to who did? Mr. FEFFERMAN. At this time I don't remember. Mr. FRASER. Were you an authorized signer on the account? Mr. FEFFERMAN. In the spring of 1974 I was. I don't remember exactly when I became an authorized signer. Mr. FRASER. Who else was an authorized signer with you? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I don't recall. Mr. FRASER. You don't know anybody else, don't recall anybody else? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Neil Salonen was definitely a signer. Other than that, I can't recall. Mr. FRASER. Did you physically see the drafts or the money that came from the Unification Church that went into the account? Mr. FEFFERMAN. No. Mr. FRASER. Do you know who did? Mr. FEFFERMAN. No. I am not even certain that the drafts did come from the Unification Church. Mr. FRASER. Were you given a budget to spend? Mr. FEFFERMAN. No; the activities of the committee were dependent very much on how much money was coming in, particularly from direct mail solicitations. Mr. FRASER. It also depended on how much money you had in the bank; didn't it? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Right. Mr. FRASER. And besides the money that came in from the direct mailing, there was additional money. Are you sure of that? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Yes. Mr. FRASER. But you don't know where it came from? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Not exactly. Mr. FRASER. Tell us as much as you do know about where the other money came from. Mr. FEFFERMAN. It is my understanding that it was coming from the Unification Church but I did not see the drafts. I cannot be sure. I believe the money was wired into our account. Mr. FRASER. You think it was wired into it? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Yes. Mr. FRASER. Where did you keep the account? Mr. FEFFERMAN. At one point it was being kept at the Union Security & Trust at 21st and I Streets. Mr. FRASER. Is that where it was initially opened? Mr. FEFFERMAN. I don't think so. Our bank was in the Dupont Circle area. Mr. FRASER. That was the first bank? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Yes. Mr. FRASER. Then that was the second bank, the one you described a moment ago? Mr. FEFFERMAN. The letter that we were just looking at went to the President dated November 29. My understanding is that the ads appeared in the newspapers on November 30. You say you were involved with helping to place those ads? Mr. FEFFERMAN. Not those ads that appeared on November 30 but ads subsequently in other newspapers appeared throughout December. Mr. FRASER. During the next week the nine remaining Day of Hope cities will receive the full page ads, which call for Forgiveness, Love and Unity on the part of the American people, and invite them to join in a forty day condition of prayer and fasting. To date. the reaction to the statement has been heartening, with over 600 pieces of mail received at Headquarters the first working day after the ad appeared. Numerous calls over the weekend offered support. One man wanted his prayer group to participate in the forty day condition. Gary Jarmin had a long interview on the radio via the telephone. Many people called wanting to speak with and to congratulate Reverend Moon. The first response promises many more exciting developments to come from this new direction. WASHINGTON FRONT LINE Belvedere trainees to Washington The Belvedere Trainees are on the move again, this time to the nation's capital to work on Project Watergate. They will be personally contacting Washington VIPS and the general public, as well as holding rallies to publicize and win support for the prayer and fast condition. Search for a new center Because our ranks have swollen with 8 new live-in members in the last month, Washington family has begun the search for a new Washington center. We are hoping to find a large building in the heart of downtown in order to keep the front line at our doorstep. Granarium gifts To meet the constantly increasing financial needs of our center, we have made a concentrated effort with homemade granariums. The results are inspiring. We make them for about $1.25 and sell them from $5.00 to $8.00, depending on the size. New members expecially are encouraged by their high sales figures, even on their first day of selling. Office buildings are very fruitful selling ground, with many people anxious to put in orders for Christmas gifts. Tea house entertainment Ginseng tea sales are also improving. The latest Tea House development is live entertainment by talented [name deleted] every Friday night. The Tea House has been drawing large crowds and we are now teaching young people who have met us there. Free spiritual food program Much teaching is also taking place in the black community at Howard University through the Free Spiritual Food Program. We are also working with local ministers to establish a free physical food program to serve the community and substantiate our work as a church with the black community. Mr. FEFFERMAN. In another document entitled "Eighth National Conference of the Unification Church and the One World Crusade," held December 11, 1973, in Chicago, there is a statement on page 2, which reads: The Day of Hope campaign costs have far exceeded our expectations, plus we have also acquired East Garden and started the Project Watergate. Father has helped us to do these things. In addition to full-page ads in every State, follow-up letters will go to every Congressman, Senator and opinion leader in the country. These activiites will have a tremendous impact on the United States and throughout the entire world. Establishing the organizational structure, a tradition of standard operating procedures, he emphasized, begins with the central point of the National Conference. So, any inconveniences people have to overcome to attend the Conferences should be considered worthwhile. Our Leader inspired the leaders to reach the 1-1-1 goal. He urged us to focus on the future and how things would be in 10 years. As leaders we have to cope with three main areas-ideological, political, and religious. Politically, we have to overcome Communist aggression. Unification Thought is our philosophical weapon against the God-denying ideology of Communism. After acquiring the truth, we must then accumulate achievement. Our motto should be "I can do". The situation in America has greatly improved since we have taken this attitude, since he has been pushing us out. Every country has been developed along similar lines, on the foundation of achievements. Now, in Japan and Korea, we are benefiting from past years of hard work.
