Area. § Six Assistant Principals hold the position of Private Secretaries, receiving allowances of 1501. each included in this Subhead. Three Assistant Principals receive allowances of 3001., 150l. and 1501. per annum respectively as Secretary to the Trade Facilities Committee, as Assistant Secretary to the National Debt Committee and Secretary to the Committee on Accounting Methods in Government Departments, and for special duties. One Assistant Principal receives an allowance of 1501. per annum from the Vote for Miscellaneous Legal Expenses as Assistant Secretary to the War Compensation Court. The Accountant and the Deputy Accountant act as Auditors of Sheriffs' Accounts without extra remuneration. The Assistant Accountant also receives 1001. as Auditor of the Crown's Nominee and Ultimus Hæres Accounts, out of which he pays for clerical assistance. A.1, SALARIES, WAGES, AND ALLOWANCES-contd. (b) The scales of pay of temporary clerks vary with the length of the working week, the place of employment, and the grading of the work; in addition the scales, which include a cost of living element, are subject to revision on 1 March and 1 September of each year on the basis of the average increased cost of living figure for the six months preceding the date of revision. For the purpose of this periodical revision, the scales which were in force from 29 March, 1924 to 31 August, 1924, have been related to an increased cost of living figure of 80 (the average figure for the six months prior to March, 1924) and, on the occasion of each half-yearly revision, these scales are subject to a reduction, or increase, as the case may be, of 5/180ths for every 5 full points by which the average increased cost of living figure for the six months preceding the date of revision falls below, or rises above, 80. Provision in the Estimates for 1926 is calculated with reference to an average increased cost of living figure of 75, on that basis the weekly scales of pay for adult Clerks employed on the basis of a 44-hour week are as follows: Grade 4 London. 54 8 62 2 38 5 46 5 At 12 large centres a scale intermediate between the London and Provincial scales is applied. (Provinces) a week, and, in the case of women 2s. 6d. (London) or 2s. 7d. (Provinces) a weck, lower than the corresponding scales set out above.
