Witness drives to Con-
rail's Hobart station
which is located about
5.5 miles from his
residence. About 50
percent of the time
he carpools to the
station. He walks
1.5 blocks from
Union Station to
his place of em-
ployment. The cars
leased from Amtrak
are described as
superlative. The
older cars are
"deplorable"; they
are dirty, they
have little heat, no
air conditioning and
the windows are
sealed.
Witness walks 5 blocks
from residence to
Conrail's Hobart
station. She takes
a bus from Union
Station to her

place of employ-
ment in the morning.
The bus costs 40
cents each way. At
night she walks to
Union Station.

455 and 456. With the
older cars used by
Conrail, people bring
blankets to keep them-
selves warm in the
winter. Riders are
"getting tired of
getting harrassed and
every 3 months saying
we are going to take
the trains off."

Daily, 9 years-- Witness' residence is

about 5 miles from
Conrail's Hobart or
Gary (5th and Chase)
stations but he pre-
fers to use the
Hobart station be-
cause of the vanda-
lism at the Gary
station. His place of
employment is about
the same distance
from Union Station
and SS's nearest
downtown station.

Witness rode in a
9-passenger van
for a 9-month
period but it was
not a satisfactory
arrangement. He
uses SS on week-
ends and holidays.
The nearest SS

from his residence.

Conrail service

Witness resides 3 miles
from Conrail's Hobart
station. On occasion
she has walked to the
station, which is
boarded up. The plat-
form is gravel. The
witness indicated
that it is "bad,
really bad." Ap-
parently it was

graded 2 or 3 years
ago. With respect to
Amtrak's assertion
that 80 hours are
spent each week clean-
ing these cars, this
witness indicated that
she could "clean them
as good as they do in
5 minutes" she did not
believe that there was
any cleaning done. She
carries a piece of
cloth to place on the
seat so she will not
soil her clothes. When
it rains water seeps
through the window
sills.

Witness drives 4 miles
from his residence to
Conrail's Hobart sta-
tion. There is no
parking charge at the
station. He works
about 150 yards from
