ACCOUNT of the Sum Expended, in the Year ended 31 March 1924, compared with the Sum Granted, for the Salaries and Expenses of the NATIONAL GALLERY, and of the NATIONAL GALLERY OF BRITISH ART, MILLBANK, including a Grant in Aid for the Purchase of Pictures. EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant. A. Due to (1) drop in bonus (600.); (2) unfilled vacancies, retirements, (1,1967.); (3) unexpended on lectures, insurance, &c. (2051.). B. —The normal Grant in Aid of 5,000l. was supplemented by 2,440l. 3s. 6d. admission fees derived from additional paying days, which were estimated to produce 2,7007. C.-Due to unforecasted extension of scheme for substituting warders for police. D. Fresh editions of catalogues and guides for Millbank were not required (1,9807). Great economy was exercised in providing picture frames, and, the building not being finished, no expenditure for frames, &c., was incurred on account of the Modern Foreign Gallery (8417.). There was a saving on telephones (15.). E.--Due to reduction in prices as compared with estimate figures, and to fewer garments being issued. F.-The figures shown are made up as follows: Estimated. EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant. A. Due to the reduction of bonus (180), substitution of two warders (see subhead C) for attendants on Sunday duty (30), exemption of attendants and head housemaid from unemployment insurance (23), vacancies and changes on the staff (£57). C. Due to the cost of substituting two warders for two attendants on Sunday duty (£25), less a saving (£15) through exemption of warders from unemployment insurance. D.—Additions to the Collection involved a greater expenditure than usual in fitting them up for exhibition. E. Due to the discontinuance of a winter supply. F. Receipts from admission fees were £109 more than anticipated, a refund of £60 was received for unemployment insurance paid out in previous years, and general sales of publications were slightly higher than estimated.
