I. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATE of the Amount required in the Year ending 31 March 1925 for Expenditure in connection with BRITISH GOVERNMENT EXHIBITS and SUNDRY DISPLAYS at the BRITISH EMPIRE EXHIBITIONS, 1924 and 1925.

Exhibition was

NOTE.-The sum of £145,000 has been advanced from the Civil Contingencies Fund, and to that extent this Vote is required to enable repayment to be made to that Fund.

B.-DISPLAYS (1924)

The original estimates proved to be insufficient in
the following respects:-

(a) Massed Band Concerts (on account of the
increased numbers of troops taking part
and the decision to hold a special Thanks-
giving Service on Empire Sunday)
(b) Pageant of Empire. Expenditure was
larger than was originally anticipated.
owing partly to the higher cost of
costumes and properties and partly to
the inclement weather which necessitated
increased expenditure for maintenance
and renovation. Also, the original anti-
cipation that if the Dominions and
Colonies should take part in the Pageant
they would bear some share of the expenses
was not fulfilled. On the other hand, con-
tributions from private sources in this
country towards the loss on the Pageant
were promised. (See note on Appro-
priations in Aid below)

A.A.-BRITISH GOVERNMENT EXHIBIT (1925)—
It is proposed that the home Government should exhibit at
the Exhibition to be held in 1925 on lines generally similar
to those for the 1924 Exhibition.

The total net expenditure on the Exhibit is not expected to
exceed £65,000, of which about £50,000 is expected to be
incurred in 1925-6

Receipts from sales of stock, fittings, etc., at the close of the
Exhibition will be paid over to the Exchequer as Extra

B.B-DISPLAYS (1925).

It is proposed to arrange, under the auspices of the British
Government, a series of Displays by the Services, to be
held in the Wembley Stadium.

Provision is required in the year 1924-25 for preliminary
expenditure, the balance falling in 1925-26. It is antici-
pated that the total expenditure, provisionally estimated
at £100,000, will be recovered from receipts from charges
for admission.

No charge will be made by the British Empire Exhibition
Association for the use of the Stadium, or for expenses
incidental thereto (attendants, etc.). The receipts will
be divided in the ratio of the expenditure by the Associa-
tion and the Government respectively up to equivalent
amounts, and any surplus will be divided equally between
the two parties...

After the original Estimate had been presented it was
arranged to admit the public free to the greater part of
the Stadium, and to reduce the prices of admission to the
better seats. In consequence of this the financial arrange-
ments with the British Empire Exhibition Association in
respect of the Displays were altered to the following—
For the Massed Band Concerts and the Pageant of
Empire-receipts apportioned in the ratio of the
expenditure incurred by the Association (for attend-
ants, etc.), and the Department of Overseas Trade
respectively.

For the Torchlight Tattoo-receipts apportioned on the
basis of equal division of net profits between the
Association and the Department of Overseas trade.

*The amount shown in respect of the Admiralty Theatre represents 70% of the takings, after payment of entertainment tax. The balance of 30% has been paid to the British Empire Exhibition in respect of the amusements concession.
