634 BENJAMIN SAYRE, born in Warwick, Orange County, N. Y., April 29, 1791; m. December 6, 1817, Rebecca Forshee, daughter of Cornelius Forshee and Elizabeth Cole, who was born in Franklin Township, Bergen County, N. J., June 25, 1796, and died June 9, 1858.

He was a farmer and distiller of apple brandy in Warwick, and was in the militia during the War of 1812.

He died October 6, 1874, in Warwick.

He was a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Ketchum Burt, and was born in
Bellvale, N. Y., Jan. 5, 1821. In 1868 he removed to Warwick, N. Y., where
he now resides (1894). He was educated in the public schools, excepting one
year in the Classical Academy, at Albany, N. Y. He has been a farmer, and
manufacturer of, and dealer in, lumber. He was for fourteen years a member
of the Board of Education; for many years Secretary and Treasurer of the
Cemetery Association; Chairman of the Board of Water Commissioners; and
since 1875 Secretary and Treasurer of the Warwick Savings Bank, which he
organized in that year. In politics he acted with the Freesoil and Republican
parties until 1872, and since that date with those favoring civil service and
tariff reform.

Mrs. Burt united early in life with the First Baptist Church of Warwick, but in later years worshipped with the Reformed Church of that city. She died Sept. 25, 1900. The local paper in an account of her funeral remarked:

She had a good knowledge of the domestic practice of medicine and nursing, and from the beginning of her married life, when trained nursing was not a profession and doctors were few and far apart, always found time notwithstanding family cares and the lack of robust health, to be with the sick among her kindred and neighbors. This untiring devotion was kept up throughout her entire life as the need arose, and few people now living here have oftener cared for the sick and closed the eyes of the dead than she.

She shared her portion liberally with those less fortunate than herself, and took a deep interest in the charities of the Woman's Auxiliary Society of the Y. M C. A.

In the discourses at the funeral, tributes of respect were paid to the worth of her character, especially in its faithfulness and unselfish ministering to others.

She was noted from childhood for her fearless spirit and independence of character. She inherited her father's temperament and features in a marked degree. She had the reputation in her school days of being the smartest girl of her classes, but terribly independent and self-reliant. When a reform dress for women, the "Bloomer Costume was first brought into notice in 1849, she early espoused and adopted it. She was refused admission to the Seward Seminary at Florida, Orange Co., N. Y., because she insisted upon wearing the dress.

She was graduated as a physician at Hygeia Therapeutic College in New York, and began the practice of medicine, first in Washington, D. C., where also she began to write for the press. In September, 1853, she was a delegate to the World's Temperance Convention, held in Metropolitan Hall, New York, where so much excitement and disturbance were aroused by women taking part in the proceedings and speaking from the platform.

She spent several years in lecturing through the country, and in writing for

the press.

July 27, 1856, she married John Whitbeck Hasbrouck, who was born in Ulster Co., N. Y., Nov. 20, 1821, and who has been connected with various papers as publisher and as editor; among others "The Sybil," at Middletown, N. Y.

In 1880 the Legislature passed a law allowing women to vote for and hold school offices. At the first election, in Middletown, Mrs. Hasbrouck was elected a member of the school board by the " Equal Rights" element, uniting with the Temperance and Democratic vote against the Republican party.

Mrs. Hasbrouck has been successful, not only in her profession as a physician and in literary matters, but in the business world as well. She has been energetic and has shown remarkable abilities. She has become interested in real estate operations, and has erected some of the finest blocks in Middletown.

635 JOSHUA SAYER, born in Orange County, N. Y., September 14, 1771; married first, Prudence Slauson, who was born in the same county, January 25, 1772, and died May 25, 1812; and second, Rebecca Greer.

He was a farmer in Minisink, N. Y., of which town he was an early settler. He was a member of the Legislature in 1814, and supervisor of the town in

1820.

He died October 21, 1835.

His will, dated September 3, 1829, was probated in Goshen, October 26, 1835.
