A CHAPTER XII. SIXTH GENERATION. LINE OF NEHEMIAH, JOB,3 JOB.2 303 ABRAHAM 5 SAYRE was born at Southampton, L. I., February 5, 1745, and married Mehitable Howell, daughter of Abner and Eunice Fithian Howell, who was born May 24, 1751, and died January 21, 1820. He belonged to the First Regiment of Minute-men of Suffolk County during the Revolution. He was usually styled "Captain." He was chosen Trustee of Southampton in 1786, 1787, 1788, 1790, 1791, 1793, 1796, 1797; elected as Assessor in 1790; as Commissioner of Highways, second district, in 1793, 1799; and as Fence Viewer in 1798, 1800. He died at Southampton April 16, 1810. His will, at Riverhead (Liber C, folio 101), dated February 14, 1810, probated December 6, 1810, reads as follows: In the Name of God, Amen. I Abraham Sayre of the town of Southampton in the County of Suffolk and State of New York yeoman being weak in body but of sound mind and memory thanks be to God therefor but calling to mind the mortality of my body do make this my last will and testament and principally and first I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I dispose of it in the following manner. First I give to my beloved wife two milch cows two good feather beds and bedding together with all my household furniture (tankard excepted) and sixty two dollars in cash and fifty cents (that is twenty-five pounds), with the use and improvement of half my house during her widowhood. Secondly. I give to my three daughters, Eunice, Ruth, and Phebe two dollars and fifty cents, to each of them, to my daughter Beulah I give five dollars, to my daughter Susannah I give one hundred and thirty five dollars in cash together with the privilege of a home in the west room while she remains single. Fourthly. I give to my son Merit one hundred dollars in cash, to my son William I give two hundred and fifty dollars in cash, To my son Jared I give one hundred and twenty five dollars in cash, and to my son Lewis I give one hundred and twenty five dollars in cash. Fifthly. I give to my son Nehemiah Sayre eight acres of woodland lying at potunck adjoining Matthew Jessup to him his heirs and assigns forever and as I have given him the one half of my Potunk land and meadow (lying down neck) in a deed my will is that the same remain to him as therein specified only half the whole below and no more. Sixthly. I give to my son Stephen my silver tankard together with all the residue and remainder of all my moveable estate of whatever nature or quality the same may be and I also give to my said son Stephen to him his heirs and assigns forever my mill together with all my buildings and all the residue and remainder of my lands woodlands meadows and commonage of which I may die seized provided however and it is my will that my sons Nehemiah & William have each of them one bed & bedding (out of the house) on the following conditions however the said bequest is made to my son Stephen, Viz. that he maintain my brother John during his natural life and also that he pay all my just debts and the legacies above mentioned and in case he refuse to comply with these conditions then my will is that so much of the lands intended for him be sold as will be sufficient to pay them. Lastly I nominate and appoint my son Stephen sole executor to this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly revoke every other will or wills by me before made, and do ratify and confirm this and none other to be my last will and testament. Aug. 17, 1778; m. July 3, 1797, Captain Matthew Rogers, who was born Dec. 10, 1762, and died Sept. 15, 1844. She died July 18, 1855. They were of Southampton, L. I. CHILDREN. I MARY ROGERS,7 b. Aug. 26, 1806; m. June 11, 1831, Charles Howell, a sea captain, the son of Oliver Howell and Mehitable Rogers, who was born at Southampton, L. I., Sept. 9, 1801. He is said to have been the first whaling captain who refused, from conscientious motives, to follow a whale on the Sabbath. He thereby lost his ship. He then went to California in 1849, remaining three years, then returned to Southampton, where he lived till his death in Dec., 1888. His wife died Aug. 1, 1867. CHILDREN. I George Rogers Howell,8 b. June 15, 1833; m. Aug. 18, 1868, Mary George Rogers Howell, one of Albany's best-known and respected citizens, died in that city on April 5, succumbing to typhoid pneumonia. Mr. Howell was born in Southampton, L. I. He graduated from Yale College, and later entered the Theological Seminary at Princeton, N. J., from which he graduated in 1864. He engaged in ministerial work in western New York for about two years. In 1865, on the recommendation of Dr. Macauley, secretary of one of the Presbyterian boards at Philadelphia, Mr. Howell was offered a professorship of Latin or Greek, at his option, in a college in Iowa. His engagements forbade his accepting the offer. A short time after his declination of the professorship, the presidency of the college was offered him, but this, too, he declined. In 1872, at the suggestion of Dr. S. B. Woolworth, he was induced to accept an office in the State library as librarian. In this office Mr. Howell rendered the State valuable service. His early study of many languages stood him in good stead in the classification, cataloguing, and arranging of the many volumes in the general library. His suggestions with regard to the purchase of suitable and desirable volumes have been very useful in the development of the resources of the library. For several years Mr. Howell was the secretary of the Albany Institute, in the welfare of which he took a deep interest. He read several valuable papers on scientific subjects before the institution, some of which have been published in the "Transactions of the Albany Institute," including "Linguistic Discussions," "The Open Polar Sea," and "Heraldry in America." wrote a "History of Southampton, L. I.," containing the genealogies of nearly all the old families there [which has been He 2 2 of invaluable service in the compilation of the present volume]. In addition to his works on scientific and literary subjects, Mr. Howell wrote an amusing book entitled "Noah's Log Book," that gained for him much favorable criticism. He was employed in the library for twenty-seven years, until his death. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Mary Seymour Howell, a popular lecturer, and one sister, Mrs. E. H. Harrington (now living on Ivy street, this city), who has resided in Bridgeport for many years. CHILD. George Seymour Howell, b. Aug. 20, 1869; d. April, 1891. July 30, 1858. 4 John Henry Howell, b. March 27, 1841; m. June, 1879, Ella V. Second Regiment Harris Light Cavalry, of New York. 5 Juliette Howell, b. Jan. 30, 1844; d. July 27, 1844. He 6 Emily Howell,8 b. Jan. 30, 1844; m. 1st, July 22, 1871, Jonathan Warren, who died Sept. 9, 1882; 2d, Aug. 3, 1886, John Harrington. He served three years in the Civil War; was enrolled on Aug. 6, 1862, in Company H, Second Regular Connecticut Heavy Artillery; discharged July 15, 1865. He died Jan. 29, 1896. His widow is a trained nurse. 7 Henrietta Howell,8 b. Dec. 12, 1845; d. Feb. 12, 1851. NANCY ROGERS,7 b. March 24, 1808; m. Albert Foster, who was born Dec. 19, 1805, and died June, 1894. He was Magistrate for over twenty years, and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church for several years. 816 NEHEMIAH,6 b. Jan. 3, 1781; d. May 3, 1830. His will, recorded at Riverhead (Liber F, folio 28), leaves property to his brothers and sisters and children of his brother Merit. 817 BEULAH,6 b. Dec. 4, 1783; m. May 5, 1806, Joseph Hildreth, Jr., who was born in 1776, and died Nov. 7, 1855. She was on the roll of members of the church at Southampton, May 2, 1831. She died Dec. 18, 1850. CHILDREN.
