good state of preservation, and the inscriptions very distinct. One of these stones is marked, "David Sayre, Esq., died April 11, 1767, in the 47th year of his age." Between the head and foot stones has grown a tree about a foot in diameter. This stone is doubtless in memory of David of the line here indicated. The title "Esq." probably indicates that he was a Justice of the Peace. In the "Annual Report of the State Historian of New York" (Vol. I. p. 524) is a list of troops from Cohansey in 1715, under command of Lieutenant Thomas Maskell, and among them appear the names of David Sayre, and David Sayre, Jr., the grandfather and father of this David. 3 207 THOMAS SAYRE. The Thomas Sayre who appears as 118 on page 94 may have been the Thomas of this line. 208 JAMES SAYRE. The James Sayre who appears as 119 on page 97 may have been the James of this line. 5 210 WILLIAM SAYRE, born in Cohansey, Salem County, N. J., in 1729; married Mary Fithian (license granted May 25, 1762), who was probably born in Salem County, N. J., and died in 1809. He is said to have removed from New Jersey to Loudoun County, Va., where he was a farmer, and later to Pennsylvania. It is claimed that he was a soldier of the Revolution and the William Sayre referred to below. Volume X, "Colonial Records of Pennsylvania," p. 756, under head of "Minutes of the Council of Safety" held at Philadelphia, October 16, 1776, a resolution was passed that the following officers be appointed in the Twelfth Battalion of Foot to be raised in this State for Continental service, commanded by Colonel William Cooke, viz.: First Lieutenants, William Sayre. "Pennsylvania Archives," Volume X, second series, pp. 757, 758: "12th Penn. Reg. Congress authorized this regiment to be raised in the counties of Northampton and Northumberland." The latter county at that time (1776) embraced a very large territory, reaching as far west as Beaver County, south to Allegheny County, and north to Lake Erie. The greater portion of the regiment was recruited on the west branch of the Susquehanna, and on December 18 it left Sunbury for the battle-fields of New Jersey. It was with Brigadier-General Thomas Conway, brigade headquarters, at Five Cross Roads at Metuchen, between Quibbletown and Amboy. Engaged at Bonnel Brook April 12, 1777, and Piscataway May 10, where Joseph Lorentz and twenty-one others were made prisoners by the British. Brandywine the Twelfth was engaged; also at Germantown. Twelfth was incorporated with the Third Regiment. On p. of field and staff officers," appears: Sayre, William. Oct. 16, 1776. In the battle of April 12, 1778, the 760, under “Roster In 1794 he removed to the vicinity of Waynesburg (then Washington County), in the extreme southwest corner of Pennsylvania. Here he bought a farm, the deed being dated November 1, 1794. He died there September 16, 1796.
