Watts' hymn books, and distributed them, crying out, "give them Watts, boys! give them Watts!" He was everywhere known for his sterling patriotism. J., April 15, 1738; married first, Lydia Harrison (license dated January 22, 1761), who died September 27, 1786, aged fifty-one years; second, Mrs. Hannah Ogden, who died in April, 1804, aged sixty-two years; third, December 2, 1804, Mary Vance Sayre Hamilton, widow of Aaron Ogden (see p. 55), and fourth, December 12, 1808, Sarah, widow of Nathaniel Canfield. One statement is that this much-married man had also married Mrs. Jerusha Dwight. He was a merchant in Newark December 7, 1774. The citizens of Newark chose a "Committee of Observation" for the township, and among them was Jonathan Sayre. Wickes' "History of Orange" states that Grove Street in that village was formerly called Whiskey Lane from the following incident. During the Revolutionary War Jonathan Sayre had stored in a barn on the lane a considerable quantity of whiskey, which was covered with salt hay. A band of Hessians discovered it while they were camped in the vicinity and got drunk on it. It came to be considered common property and everybody filled his jug from it, and the lane became known as "Whiskey Lane." He died May 31, 1815, and was buried in Trinity Churchyard, Newark. His will, dated April 4, 1815, was probated July 29, 1815, and is recorded in Newark (Liber C, folio 56). It divides his estate into twelve parts, apportioned among his children and grandchildren. He was graduated at Yale in 1801, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practised in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. In 1810-12 he was surrogate of Dutchess County. He was elected as a Federalist to Congress, and served from May 24, 1813, till March, 1815. In 1816 and 1818 he was a member of the State Legislature. He was appointed Attorney-General of New York State in 1819, and in 1820 was again a member of the Legislature. He was again elected to Congress as a Clinton Democrat, and took his seat on December 3, 1827, but resigned in 1828, on receiving the appointment of Judge of the Superior Court of New York City. When that Court was reorganized in 1846 he was elected Chief Justice. He received the degree of LL.D. from Union College in 1853.. He died in New York, May 12, 1857. CHILD. He died there, unmarried, Nov. 26, 1822. His will, recorded in Liber C, folio 556, bequeaths his watch to James H. Wainwright, and makes other gifts to his sister-in-law, Sarah Sayre, widow of his brother Jabez, Thomas James, son of Josiah James, and Robert W. Oakley, son of Thomas J. Oakley, Esq., of Poughkeepsie, N. Y. 132 DAVID 5 SAYRE, born November 8, 1740, in Newark, N. J.; married Johannah Sargeant, of Newark. She died September 6, 1810, aged sixty-four. He owned a large amount of property in Newark, including homestead on east side of Broad Street, running down to the Passaic River; a stone quarry which he bought in 1782, 18 acres; a dock which he bought in 1792; another lot below the great swamps, conveyed to him on March 16, 1789, by Ichabod Sayre, "now deceased," and other property enumerated in Liber Y, pp. 411, 415, 421, which his daughters conveyed to his son David. In 1786-1798 he was Overseer of Highways. He was Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church, Newark, N. J. He died May 16, 1813, aged seventy-three. They are both buried in Trinity Churchyard, Newark, N. J.
