The currency of the country is the Mexican dollar or peso, which is nominally worth half an American dollar or 28. ld. In practice, however, the average value of the peso may be taken as 2s. Od., and the rates for buying and selling drafts on London fluctuate very slightly. Exchange. In the annexes to this report the figures in local currency have been converted into sterling at the rate of 28. 01d. to the peso. Weights and measures.-The metric system of weights and measures is generally used in commercial transactions. Population. The population of the Republic of Mexico, according to the last census taken in 1900, was 13,545,462, but the present population is generally estimated at 15,000,000.
