ORIGINAL AGE-GRADE-PROGRESS DATA

School...

(In semiannual-promotion schools indicate whether grade is high or low.)

[blocks in formation]

1 This refers to years (or terms) spent in school beginning with the first grade. This material is to be gathered in case the school system desires to make a study of the influence of preschool education on subsequent progress through the school system.

Because nursery schools and kindergartens have not been established uniformly over the country, it is not feasible to begin counting the years of school with either the nursery school or the kindergarten. It is, however, wise to gather statistics on nursery schools and kindergartens where such exist, with the object of determining what proportion of children of nursery school and kindergarten age are enrolled and to see what influence such preschool training may have on the age-grade-progress of children in the elementary school and high school. For schools desiring to study this phase of education the last column in Form I has been inserted and Form II provided. The progress of pupils with varying degrees of preschool training can be studied by making separate age-grade-progress studies of pupils of no preschool training, those with 1 year, and those with 2 years. Form II is presented for use by those schools which desire to determine the number and age distribution of the children enrolled in preschool educational activities.

Forms III to VI make provision for the tabulation of age-gradeprogress statistics by grades for schools organized on an annual promotion basis. In these forms have been included columns both for the "date of birth" and "age." This seems at first glance unnecessary, due to the definition of ages given previously. However, since the forms should be reproduced for the use of individual teachers, it is thought best that the age definition be repeated on all forms.

The data on these forms may be tabulated by the teacher from the data concerning individual pupils as listed in Form I, or from the teacher's register. The procedure is as follows: Take the date of birth of each child and ascertain in which classification he belongs by age. Then follow the line of this classification to the column which indicates the number of years he has attended school. For example, a pupil who was born on October 7, 1930, and who is spending his second year in the first grade would belong in the row marked "June 1, 1930, to Nov. 30, 1930" and his "years in school" would be in the column marked "2." The square at which the row and the column intersect would be the one in which to record him. If a school system has more than one section of the same grade, the data for all sections should be compiled.
