Forms XI and XII may be used for this purpose. Form XI has been filled in with data of the first and sixth grades used in figures 1 and 2 and with additional sample data for the other grades. "Normal age" is based on the table of normal ages given in chapter I. "Below" or "above age" refers to all pupils who are below or above the normal age group. The "percent" refers to the percent of pupils below age, of normal age, and above age in each grade. HOW TO MAKE A SUMMARY OF RETARDED AND ACCELERATED PROGRESS The original age-grade-progress reports give for each grade the number of years (or terms) pupils have spent in school, as well as the ages of the pupils. If the number of years a pupil has attended school is the same as the number of the grade in which he is working, his progress is said to be normal. If he has spent 1 or more years beyond the number indicated by the grade in which he is working, his progress is considered as retarded. Similarly, if he has spent 1 or more years less than the number indicated by the grade in which he is working, his progress is considered accelerated. With the same data that were used in making up the sample material in Form XI, the form for "Summary of grade progress," annualpromotion schools (Form XIII), has been filled in. Similar data in semiannual-promotion schools may be compiled on Form XIV. It should be noted that the statistics on accelerated or retarded progress for semiannual-promotion schools cannot be compared directly with similar data for annual-promotion schools, because in the one case the statistics are gathered by half years and in the other by years. If it is desired to present the grade progress data according to the number of years (or terms) accelerated or retarded, Forms XV and XVI may be used. |
