EXPLANATORY NOTES.

1. This Paper shows, in their respective classes, all Battleships, Battle Cruisers, Cruisers, Cruiser Minelayers, Armoured Coast Defence Vessels and Monitors, Aircraft Carriers, Flotilla Leaders, Destroyers, Torpedo Boats, Submarines, Sloops, Coastal Motor Boats, Gunboats and Despatch Vessels, River Gunboats and Minesweepers of each Navy.

The following lengths of life are assumed for vessels :

The age of a ship is counted from the date of completion, and all vessels beyond these age limits are shown in italics.

The tonnages of vessels laid down subsequent to the Washington Conference are shown according to the Washington Treaty, i.e., excluding fuel and reserve feed water.

A fair comparison between the vessels of each Power may be obtained by reference to their respective ages, displacements, armaments, &c. 2. Vessels built are shewn separately from those building or projected, as follows:

(a) Vessels built.

(b) Vessels building (includes only those vessels which have actually been laid down or for which money is voted in the current estimates.)

(c) Vessels projected (includes vessels authorised or projected, but for which no money is yet voted.)

Vessels are not transferred from the building to the section until they have completed their trials and are ready for commissioning.

3. In each class, vessels are arranged in types, the latest designed type being placed first in the case of those built, and last in the case of those building.

4. A numerical summary of the vessels included in this Paper is shown on pages 3 and 4.

5. The following letters are adopted to indicate :—

(a) the type of machinery fitted:

Turbine and Reciprocating. Reciprocating.

Coal and oil fuel. - Gasoline or petrol.

6. Guns of 30 inch or larger calibre are shewn in inches to one place of decimals. Guns of smaller calibre than 30 inch are grouped together. Letters A.A. after a number denote anti-aircraft guns, letter T. in the Armament column denotes torpedo tubes,
