[Vote 2.] MEMORANDA. NAVY ESTIMATES, 1927. EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCE. See preceding page for Memoranda and Explanation under Subhead F. G.-PROVISIONS, MESSING ALLOWANCES, &c. This Subhead provides (1) for the cost of provisions for the Fleet and for the Royal Marines, including issues on repayment, and for supply to other Departments of Government, &c., and (2) for the several classes of money allowances granted either to supplement the Standard Ration, or in lieu of service victualling, except as provided for under Subhead H. These allowances are revised from time to time in accordance with fluctuations in prices, but at present the rates are as follow: Government Mess Traps and replacements (within a fixed annual limit) are supplied free of charge to all Flag Officers and Commanding Officers of II.M. Ships and to Ward Room, Gun Room and Warrant Officers' Messes. Provision is also made in this Subhead for the cost of Mess Traps for Chief Petty Officers, Petty Officers, and Men, Mess Gear for use in the Sick Berths of H.M. Ships, and implements and stores required in connection with the victualling arrangements generally in H.M. Ships. Allowances are paid to Stewards for the efficient care of Officers' Mess Traps at rates varying from 1d. to 1s. a day. L. MISCELLANEOUS STORES. This Subhead provides for the cost of casks, cases and other packages, and also for the working plant, including office furniture, and consumable stores at the Victualling Yards. MEMORANDA. NAVY ESTIMATES, 1927. [Vote 2.] EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCE. M.-NAVAL CLOTHING, SOAP AND TOBACCO; AND ALLOWANCES IN LIEU OF CLOTHING, &c. This Subhead provides for the cost of clothing, bedding, soap and tobacco, including supplies for sale to Officers and Men, also to other Departments of Government, and to Contractors (for making up) on repayment. It also provides for payment of gratuities to certain Officers in aid of outfit, for the allowances granted to Men whose pay is chargeable to Vote 1, for the upkeep of their kit, and for other allowances in connection with clothing. Kit upkeep allowances, when granted to men paid from Votes other than Vote 1, are provided for under such Votes. The kit upkeep allowances are revised from time to time in accordance with fluctuations in prices. The rates in force on 1st April, 1927, are: Chief Petty Officers and Petty Officers wearing the special uniform of that rating Men dressed as Seamen Men not dressed as Seamen £ s. d. 9 12 0 per annum. 7 10 0 900 Gratuities in aid of Outfit, &c., are paid to: " Chief Petty Officers and Petty Officers on promotion to Warrant Officers.
