[Vote 3.] Wages of Hospital Servants on the Established and Hired Wages of Sick Berth Staff and others, borne on the books Allowance in lieu of Provisions (a) For numbers and description of Naval Ratings and Established and Hired Civilians employed in Naval Hospitals, see Appendix No. 5. (b) With the exception of one these are on the hired list. The wages staff consists of Civilians (Established and Hired) and Naval ratings. The wages of Hired men are determined by the Admiralty, those of Established men are authorized by the Treasury. The Sick Berth Staff is recruited from Civilians and Marines. Treasury sanction is necessary to any increase either in the established Civilian Staff or Staff of Sick Berth Ratings at the several establishments, but not as regards the number of Probationers under training at Chatham, Haslar and Plymouth, who are entered as required. Sisters at the Naval Hospitals are allowed hired female servants in the proportion of one to every three Sisters; no establishment, however, to have less than two such servants. Allowance is made in this Subhead for the wages, &c., of men employed on repayment services (except those for other votes). Provision is made under this Subhead for Extra Pay to Seamen, &c., of the Fleet temporarily employed in Medical Establishments at Home and Abroad, who are borne on Ships' books, and whose pay is provided in Vote 1. The rates of extra pay vary according to the rating of the man and the class of work on which he is engaged. B.-WAGES, &c. H.-HOSPITAL AND INFIRMARY This Subhead provides for Provisions for Patients and Sick Berth Staff and Stores (including Coal, Boats and Pontoons, &c., for use at Hospitals, Furniture, Bedding, Medical Glassware and Earthenware, Disinfectants, Dressings, Medical Utensils, Medicines, Surgical and Dental Instruments and Appliances, X-Ray Outfits, and Microscopes and Bacteriological Apparatus), for Hospitals and Infirmaries, for Sick Bays of H.M. Ships and for Hospital Ships. Provision is also made on account of Medicines, &c., for Dockyards, &c., and for the cost of dental appliances supplied to Naval and Marine personnel in certain circumstances or to other Government employees when necessitated by an injury sustained on duty. A Stock of General Medical Stores is kept at Deptford, except Bedding and Clothing, which are drawn from the Naval Store Department and Victualling Department, respectively, as required. Issues are made on requisitions approved by the Medical Department. Medicines and Instruments are purchased of duly appointed Contractors, and stocks of the former, for issues to ships, are maintained at the various Naval Hospitals. All freight charges in respect of stores incurred prior to official acceptance and entry on Store Ledger charge are borne by the Store Subhead as part of the prime cost of the articles purchased. Certain medical comforts and other Stores supplied to Sick Bays of H.M. Ships are provided for under Vote 2 and Vote 8, Section II., respectively.
